Rumsfeld to order Syria invasion plan.
BRIDGE Information Systems Story .BDRDX

Updated at: 10 APR 2003 14:31:09

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--An intelligence source says U.S. Defense Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld last week ordered the drawing up of contingency plans for a
possible invasion of Syria, Newsday reported Thursday. According to the newspaper's Web site, Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith is working on a policy paper highlighting how Syria's support of terrorist groups is a threat to the region. But the newspaper also reported that a senior Pentagon officer said he was unaware of any new planning regarding Syria.
Rumsfeld said Wednesday that Syria had allowed Iraqi regime figures to enter
and had provided Iraq with military technology

Syria is a haven of terrorism, on the state list since 1979. The UN or international community should put pressure on them to stop supporting Islamic Jihad, Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine and Hamas, as well as letting the Iranians pass arms through Syria to Hezbollah. There should be concern for military action though.

You are either a great comic or seriously disturbed......

I believe the latter!

The Patriot Act intends to feret out the terrorists among us......I guess you dont want that.....

I dont see who the US has bullied......U do?

1. Head of the press department at the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Buthaina Shaaban, said that Syria would not recognize a U.S. military government in Iraq. Shabaan said, ”There is a difference between a transitional government and a military government. If it is going to be a military one, then it will be an occupation government. There are international laws that call for recognizing the government that the people choose."

Note: This, coming from the occupiers of Lebanon.

2. The Arab Group at the United Nations has withdrawn a request for a special session to discuss the war on Iraq amid speculation that Baghdad has fallen. Several Arab envoys to the United Nations have said the request will be renewed at a later date -- depending upon circumstances -- while nations like Kuwait who oppose the special session believe it is dead.

1. Learn from McCarthyism. Learn from the Salem witch trials. Our government goes to extremes and being innocent has rarely been a viable defense.

Unless you can tell me that the US government will use the information to ONLY pursue terrorists. In which case, I have a bridge i'd like to sell you.

2. You're joking, right? Let's see: Turkey+$20billion aid package=ability to use Turkish land to stage military operations. Amazingly enough, they turned us down.

Oh, wait, Syria doesn't have any oil. What's our reason for wanting to go in there? Wait, North Korea doesn't have oil. Hmmmmmmmmm...........Iraq does. I sense a pattern here.

Oy vey!

Reading a busybody thread is like visiting a mental ward.

Keeping this thread on the subject, something is going to have to be done about Syria as part of the Israeli-Palestine peace deal. I would prefer to see diplomatic pressure on Syria to renounce terrorism and close the offices of these groups in Damascus. A military venture would be the last resort, this situation poses a whole different set of problems than Iraq does.

I was thinking this, but then thought that given the easy at which the Coalition forces dismantled the Iraqi amry, wouldn't this in itself serve as a deterrent to Syria and Iran?

Also, with the U.S. about to claim victory, this greater leverage in the Middle East would enable Bush to put the screws to Sharon and demand that the Israeli-Palestinian peace process move forward. Otherwise, our actions in Iraq will be mostly for naught and we'll still have a couple of million Arabs pissed at us.

I do believe the recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq does serve as a deterent, at least on a government thinking level. Whether that will remain after Bush leaves office remains in question. I have little doubt that most of those governments do not like Bush or the US policy, but definately understand if they come into the crosshairs the trigger will be pulled.

I am no huge fan of Sharon and I've favored a peace agreement in the middle east. I agree with you that now is the time to make that happen. Bush needs to influence Sharon, and the Palestinians need to renounce these terror organizations and seek new leadership. Syria plays a key role in starting and stopping terrorism in that part of the world, there is no question that Syria needs to be brought on board the process and called to the carpet on their support of terrorism.
