Okay, here's the newest big debate in the local news. It's called Potty Parity. For those of you outside the United States this is about the problem women have getting into the bathroom during social events. This problem is caused by their need for more time, hence more stalls than men. The ideas being floated are to build womens bathrooms with a seating plan with a two for one or better ratio. (Two womens stalls for every one mens stall or urinal.) (Here in Florida we go one better than most places though. We have Men's rooms, Women's rooms, and Family rooms. {No I haven't figured this one out, although I'm sure it has to deal with changing or taking children into the bathrooms.})
My idea is to eliminate the problem entirely. Make all bathrooms co-ed. This would eliminate the disparity, ( a stall is a stall is a stall after all.) I'm sure we could easily redeisgn the urinals to be more co-ed friendly, and it would eliminate the need for the family restrooms. Oh sure, we would offend some people, but then again we offended many when we went inter-racial didn't we?
Any other ideas on the matter?
(Of course this is all tongue in cheek. I can't ever imagine the United States doing anything this progressive, much less some of the European communities.)

You mean I wasn't supposed to use the men's room during the Colorado Avalanche game??? The men all took it in stride. *shrug*

Probably the most amazing bathroom I've been at was co-ed, and here in Porto, in the Museum of Contemporary Art.

I don't see why a ratio has to be set by anyone. It makes no sense. There is a minimum number of facilities required based on projected users, and anything beyond that is an architectural prerogative.

I use mens bathrooms if I must (shrug)
No big deal to me.

however a co-ed bathroom would just be more full woman would still check teir makeup and do what we do only now there would be men there too.

Co-ed WCs are common in CA. We have them at my university and HMO offices. My only gripe is going in and having the seat up with piss drops about.

Many public places (the opera house) have accommodated more stalls for women, and when it's especially crowded women use the men's room without reservation.

Golly....you're supposed to make reservations too???

Can I have one stall for one....I'd like a stall in an out of the way corner if possible...it's a very special night.....

Okay, okay...I'll stop now....

At the Oakland Colisseum they don't have urinals in the mens' rooms. What they have is a gutter with a steady flow of water. Actually, that works out better but probably uses more water. I don't know how they could convert that to coed, though.
Fit mirrors in the bottom of the trough, of course.

If that's true, this is good news. I often wanted somewhere I could change my children. Preferably for better behaved ones, but anything would have been a relief at times.

All bathrooms in houses are Co-Ed.

And that's about all I have to say on this subject.

All public restrooms should be private restrooms. With stalls.

No one should have to perform a less-than-sexy body function in the presence of strangers. Especially in the workplace. Jeez. Is there anything less conducive to, say, a client relationship of mutual respect, than peeing in adjoining stalls while identifying one's neighbor by her shoes?

Why bother to wear business suits if we're going to learn how often and how much a stranger empties his or her bladder? Why not just go bottomless and sniff each other's behinds like they do at the dog park.

The demeaning nature of corporate bathrooms has been a particular rant-in-the-making of mine ever since I discovered that there truly are "executive restrooms" and that they provide privacy. The elite are relieving themselves in luxury, people!

I once saw a design for a co-ed urinal.

The person who designed it actually used some common sense, and had a sense of humor as well. (He was a retired plumber.) The urinal had an elongated front, with wider sies than those made now, allowing women to either stand over it, or actually sit on it facing the wall. At his wifes urging he had included a wide top with a mirror. Unfortunately the design required women to either remove thier pants from at least one leg, or to wear skirts and pull their panties to the side.
BTW, he also designed a tiolet with a built in Bidet. Cool idea.

Hmmmm, interesting idea.

Hey, I'm all for going bottomless or nude in the workplace, or anywhere else for that matter. Too bad it's against the law.:p

Is there performance anxiety related to emptying your bladder?

Yes, there is, Mack. It is called Bashful Kidney. It describes the inability to pee in public.

Well I thought it was funny.

Yeah. Those trough arrangements are pretty common for men's bathrooms at sporting events. 50-70 guys hip-to-hip pissing in a galvanized steel horse trough. And the floor around it is always wet. Ugh!

What you don't see is that the drain pipe goes right to the beer concession stand outside. It's called 'recycling'.

We have 'pop up' urinals in London, they rise out of the pavement to accommodate beer swilling party folk. Somewhat reminscent of Anais Nins descriptions of French urinals and the 'flash of pink members'. Can't see the female population using them, too public. Though did once see a young woman singlehandedly try to raise the level of the canals in Venice as we drifted past in a gondola at night. She had started, so she finished.

Then there is the delightful answer the Mexican gave the tourist.

"Up against the wall gringo."

Unisex toilets

Unisex toilets used to be common in France with a dragon of a lady guarding them.

I went to a open air pop concert last year. There were toilets for men, toilets for women and over 100 portaloo single toilets that could be used by either.

The women's toilets had a queue, the portaloos had a queue (of women), the men went in the bushes because the women had taken over the men's toilets as well.

Edited for PS: The town of Hastings in East Sussex was notorious in the 1910s because they installed urinals for women. They had a tiled wall and women were expected to haul up their dresses and pee against the tiles. They even had pictures in the entrance to show how.

There were no queues for that toilet. They had to convert it to normal cubicles after a couple of months.
