I've been here just a few weeks but have read a great many stories. I'm generally impressed with the quality and have ranked stories accordingly. My question involved the rankings: do only authors see how their stories are ranked?

You can find rankings of the top couple of hundred (either as a whole or in categories) by clicking on "Top Lists" on the Story page.

You can find individual story ratings on a few hours delay in voting by checking titles on the "Stories by Category" listings on the Story page.
