What is it about the Kiwis?

Such a small country. Such huge talent.

Where does it come from?

Don't worry, there's still plenty of untalented people like me making up the numbers!

Maybe we're so far away from anywhere we just have to try that much harder to get noticed...

Things you should know about the people of New Zealand.

- The only country of all time to have never been defeated by the British.

- Trench warfare

- First women to vote

Not sure about the first one, a treaty was signed, so I guess not a military defeat, but there MUST be other countries out there with a similar history.

Yes, first women's suffrage - we're all very proud of that.

Also, one of if not the first national nuclear free zones.

At the moment the press are going bananas over Lorde, which is a shame as - while I think she is talented - it means I'll start to dislike her.

America was never defeated by the Brits.

New Zealand is the only country which has never been defeated by the brits. If you don't realise what a feat that is you are a dickhead.

The Treaty was signed? And what did the people sign?

You're not a kiwi, are you?

New Zealand was never conquered.

It's true.

And the treaty that was signed gave Maori sovereignty over their land.

But that isn't what this thread is about. This thread is about New Zealanders and their awesome skills.

It's an absurd statement. It stretches the truth in multiple directions to make such a silly claim.

For example, when did Britain defeat Belgium? They have never fought a war. Now, the territory that now comprises the nation of Belgium was formerly controlled at various times by the French and the Dutch, but neither the French nor the Dutch are "Belgium"

Or take, for example, Finland. Finland was an ally of Germany during the Second World War, so technically, since the British were one of the involved parties in defeating Germany ( and by no means the primary victor ) one could stretch the facts to make the claim that Britain had defeated Finland, when their was no direct military interaction between them of any consequence.

Canada? There was no such country until the British created it. The fact that they defeated the French on land that is now within the boundaries of Canada does not make it a Canadian defeat.

You have shifted the terms of your argument. "Conquered" and "defeated" are not synonyms.

So, back to my original question, who are some of these Kiwis In whom you take so much pride? I don't think the rest of the world knows enough about them.

I am a kiwi, yes.

It would be interesting to hear which talented NZers you're thinking of? If an actual famous person mentions a kiwi on twitter it's pretty much national news here, so it would be good to hear which kiwis are actually world famous, rather than just world famous in New Zealand...

Look above you, nitwit.

Ernest Rutherford was 1st class by any standard.

Kate Sheppard. Who appears on the $10 note.
Margaret Mahy. Children's Author.
Witi Ihimaera - Author (The Whale Rider, Greenstone etc.)
Tamati Waka Nene
Hongi Hika

New Zealand has never been conquered by the british. New Zealand is still a kickass country. There's no denying that.

Why did we need a New Zealand anyway? What was wrong with the old Zealand?

I should say, here in NZ we still think dialup's a pretty neat idea, so that combined with my general slow thought processes and two-fingered henpeck typing several new posts can arrive before I know it...

Rutherford was a bit of a legend. He's on our $100 note. The only other person of note on our notes would be Ed Hillary.
