Looks like the duct tape's not a bad idea for New Yorkers, as only doctors can administer a cyanide antidote.

Security Blanket Covers NYC for Potential Terror Attacks
By Jeff McKay

February 13, 2003

(CNSNews.com) - The New York City metropolitan area is on a heightened state of alert as the city prepares for potential attacks from terrorists above and below ground.

Eric Rackow, chief medical officer for New York University Medical Center, issued a memo ...naming cyanide as the specific threat agent."

All city hospitals were told to stock up on sodium thiosulfate, the antidote for cyanide that can only be dispensed by doctors.

Yet...Bloomberg was interviewed on the subway tonite saying it's more likely to get hit by a car in NYC than attacked by a terrorist on the subway.

I'd like some cyanide with my asbestos please.
And to think there are some who bitch about people smoking in bars, its not gonna fuckin' matter when bio-warfare is in the air!

Symptoms of Low level Cyanide Vapor exposure
Intense eye, nose and airway irritation
Increased Rate and depth of breathing
Dizziness
Nausea and Vomiting
Headache

Signs of High Cyanide Vapor exposure
Immediate
Diaphoretic
Pupils normal or large
Hypertension and tachycardia
Effects at time 15 Seconds
Transient increased breathing rate, depth
Effects at time 30 Seconds:
Seizure
Effects at time 2 to 4 Minutes
Respiratory arrest from central apnea
Effects at time: 4 to 8 Minutes
Terminal hypotension
Bradyarrhythmia
Cardiac arrest
Effects at time 6 to 8 Minutes
Death

Detection
Odor
Bitter almonds (Only detectable by 50% of people)

Management
Decontamination
Vapor: None
Liquid: Wash skin with soap and water
Minimal risk of off-gassing
Antidote (2 Step Process)
First: Sodium Nitrite to form Methemoglobin
Adults: 10 ml IV (1 ampule of Pasadena kit)
Pediatric: 0.33 ml/kg of 3% solution IV over 10 min
Alternative: Amyl Nitrate crushed and inhaled
Contraindicated in carbon monoxide (e.g. fire)
Next: Sodium thiosulfate to act as sulfur donor
Adult: 50 ml (1 large bottle in Pasadena kit)
Pediatric: 1.65 ml/kg IV of 25% standard solution
Supportive care
Oxygen
Correct acidosis

Prevention
Activated Charcoal in chemical protective mask
Absorbs cyanide and provides full protection

Triage
Immediate
Presentation within minutes of exposure
Seizures or recent apnea with circulation intact
Minimal
Mild effects and out of exposure
Delayed
Recovering from mild effects or successful therapy
Expectant
Apnea and circulatory failure
Course
Observe survivors for 24-48 hours after exposure

Police officers stand guard in Times Square Thursday.

Buy MetroCards, not duct tape, says Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who Thursday rejected the advice of federal officials who advocate stocking up supplies in case of a terror attack and warn children about riding the city’s subways.

“There is no reason why you should duct-tape your windows,” Bloomberg said, flanked by police and fire officials at a late afternoon news conference. “Go about your business. The city’s safe.”

Despite the exhortation, the city was clearly a jittery place Thursday.

Hospitals prepared for biological and chemical attacks. Bomb scares snarled tunnel and subway traffic. Trucks are now barred from the Williamsburg Bridge. The police staged a terrorism drill under the Manhattan Bridge.

Bullshit. I used to run a possum trapping line using cyanide baits. Everytime I picked up more cyanide I was also given a pack of amyl nitrate poppers... the recommended antidote. I also have a buddy who owes his life to the amyl nitrate... it works.

Military types use poppers as well for triage and milder cases, yes.

Please note the following exerpt from my previous post:

NEW YORK — Americans looking for easy-to-understand information on biological terror threats now have a good resource at their fingertips, and the author hopes it becomes much more than simply a coffee table book.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, the chamber's only doctor, last year published the book When Every Moment Counts. It details "what you need to know about bioterrorism," and is aimed at the everyday American looking for more information on anthrax, plague, smallpox and other possible threats, as well as what people can do to protect themselves against them.

The chemical warfare section says signs that a chemical attack has occurred would appear within minutes or hours, and the first indications may be distinct odors, colored residues and dead insects or animals. In the case of a biological attack, however, the effects may not be seen or felt for days or weeks, and there are typically no environmental indicators "such as dead birds falling out of the sky," Frist writes.

The book details various nerve and blister agents, and cites hydrogen cyanide as another chemical to be aware of. Easy to make by mixing salt and a strong acid, this substance can be extremely toxic in large doses. Hydrogen cyanide was spiked into Tylenol in the United States in 1982 and caused rampant panic. The scare led to the development of tamper-resistant packaging.

If it smells like fruit gums it could be your last gasp

Sarin is a colourless vapour that smells like fruit gums; cyanide smells like burnt almonds.

Tips from a federal government handbook available on the CIA Internet site on how to recognize and react to a terrorist chemical, biological or radiological attack.

PERSONAL SAFETY

If outside, approach the suspected area from upwind.

Cover all exposed skin and protect nose, throat and lungs.

If inside, evacuate and try to stay away from contaminated area. Turn off air conditioning.

Once clear, remove all clothes, shoes, gloves or hats and leave outside.

Thoroughly wash with soap and water. If available, use one part bleach and 10 parts water as decontaminant.

CHEMICAL INCIDENT INDICATORS

Numerous dead animals, birds or fish. Lack of normal insect life.

People with blisters, choking symptoms, rashes. Illnesses confined to a geographic area.

Unusual liquid droplets, large patches of dead trees, grass and the like.

Unexplained smells: fruity or flowery, garlic/horseradish-like, bitter almonds, newly mowed hay.

Low-lying clouds or fog that are not explained by surroundings.

BIOLOGICAL INCIDENT INDICATORS

Unscheduled and unusual spray disseminated, especially at night.

Abandoned spray devices.

RADIOLOGICAL INCIDENT INDICATORS

Unusual metal debris.

Containers displaying radiation symbols.

Material emits heat with no sign of external heating source.

Strongly radioactive material may glow.

Strangely, the material says only 50% of the population can smell cyanide...
