The other day the Chief Instructor for the local Nursing School was on my unit getting things set up for the next class. When she saw me we talked for a bit and she asked me about my New Years Resolutions. Half jokingly I told her I was promising myself to be meaner than ever to those who deserved it. She looked at me and started laughing while telling me there was no way I could get worse than I already am. Then she mentioned a student a couple of semesters back that had us both laughing.
Now this student was a younger male. Tall and good looking he was very self important. He looked down on everyone on the floor. He felt that the only reasons there were R.N.'s and Aides on the floor were to cater to him. He seemed to take a special dislike to me. He made sure to put me in my place every chance he got. I finally became irritated enough to want to do something about this. Then one day I had my chance.
One of our patients at the time had a massive intestinal infection. One that had gone far beyond being a stomach ailment and into the realm of being a dangerous illness. He was hospitalised and treatment started. Unfortunately it was too late. The patient was too weak and treatment had been started way too late. The patient died from the illness.
Now the patient died very early in my shift. At roughly 0645 as a matter of fact. Things were set in motion but the Funeral Home wouldn't be able to pick the patient up for several hours. The room door was closed after we cleaned the patient up.
At 0800 the students came onto the floor and I was starting to get an idea. I looked into the room and was amazed at how much the patients abdomen had swelled. The patient may have been deceased but the Bacteria were still alive and well. I and my co-workers had seen this before and we knew what was going to happen soon. My idea jelled. I stepped out of the room after turning up the heat a bit and approached both the R.N. in charge of that room and the Chief Instructor. They listened to me and agreed.
A short while later the student entered the room. He was charged with doing the Vital Signs as well as doing a complete Patient Assesment. We watched from the door as the student walked confidently up to the patient, introduced himself and started in. He looked a bit concerned when he couldn't find a pulse in the patients wrist. He soldiered on though and wrapped a B/P Cuff around the patients arm and pumped it up. He really started looking concerned when he couldn't find a Blood Pressure, then he noticed just how cool and calm the patient was. He leaned forward to check the patients breathing. When there was no felt breath he stood up quickly, in the process he pushed on the mattress jostling the patient with the results we were expecting.
The patient sat up and belched one of the most god aweful smelling belches you have ever been witness to before laying back down with a sigh. The student absolutely freaked out. He turned several shades of colors while standing there for a few seconds before turning for the door and bolting. We barely had time to get out of his way as he blasted through the door and up the hall towards the bathrooms.
Oddly enough we never did see the student again. I gather he decided Nursing wasn't for him. I wonder what field he went into?
