I Googled "quotes for New Year's Resolution" for handmade cards (a traditional Neo-thing to do) and got lost in the Internet trash. Most of the quotes I found were rehashed Thanksgiving quotes and thought the poets here could come up with something much better then the heap I found.

So, a bit of a challenge. Write something both poetic and short about the New Year, not necessarily resolutions.

( General chit chat is welcome as long as you also participate in the thread.)

janus doesn't need to turn his head
just process what's coming

the view ahead foreshortened
the view behind trails off
beyond

his twinned long-seeing eyes

I make a promise every year

It doesn't matter how resolute you are
if you don't follow through it is just
wasted words hollow and empty

resolutions are like rules
there is only satisfaction
in their breaking

Beneath the
celebration fireworks
for a birth,
hear the shrieks and cries
of unwilling death.

I promise you shall never see
A New Years Resolution
from the likes of me

For X-Mas really hit the spot
and by then
I'll be totally shot
Ker-pot!!!!?!!!!

well short but not poetic, I hate poetic

This is something rough which came to me this morning.

I resolve to stop driving past your house,
knowing I won't knock on your door.
Not today, maybe if I see some sign of life.
A flower pot moved into the sun or an open curtain.
Anything to entice me to your door
and ask the question I don't want answered
and maybe ask forgiveness for buckling under the weight
of a burden no rational man would lift,
but a boy would raise high and run
and I did.
I have to know if you know
what you cost and what you bought.
Maybe you know,
maybe you always knew,
maybe you never cared,
maybe you never thought of it,
maybe it never mattered at all.
I did not leave.
I did not run away.
I did not hide.
I just stepped outside for air,
a boxer's minute between rounds,
just to breathe deep and stand at the bell,
gloves at my chin, ready to swing and jab.
The ceiling caved in behind me
and you were in the wreck,
buried under debris a boy could not lift.

So I drive past your house,
not so far out of my way,
not so much time out of my day,
and know one day you will be there.
I will stop and act as if it was just chance.
Act as if I recognize you through forty years
and wait for you to answer every unasked question.

with every new year
i get older
and when the year gets older
i still get older
so what's the point?

Yipes. Can we really not find something nothing nice to say about a new year? Not that mine would be a lot more uplifting, but maybe this is a case where my Dad's favorite motto comes in : If you can't say something good, then say nothing at all.
Actually, maybe that's one!

Will think on it Neo, and come up with something more rosy later today.

..
The surf breaks at the point
waves never get older after reaching the shore
but somehow they form again
move forward, seek the distant coast
pointless?

claim you are on a different calender. Mayan or something, that should give you another 60 years to come up with something.
for it is written:
Time is like a river
and then you hit the dam

from the book of Salmon
