New year story

Do you have a New Year story?.

Horror or otherwise.

Mine happened a while back when I was still married to my ex.

We were jiving.I spun her round,as you do.She slipped on those
4" heels and fell over.

She was the first patient of the new year at the local hospital,having her broken arm fixed.

I was quite young at the time (9 to be exact). I remember the date well.......December 31st, 1971. A former Navy man named Mark Essex decided to make history in New Orleans. That night, he went to the roof of the Downtown Howard Johnson hotel and began shooting anyone and everyone who he chosed to. Several tenants and employees of the hotel were killed or wounded before dozens of others on the street were. The sniper event continued well into the morning of the beginning of the year of 1972. Sometime before noon, Essex was shot and killed by holicopter police.

That event brought the creation of NOPD's S.W.A.T team and, to this day, is used in a segment of police training academy.

A couple of months prior to that incident, there was a horrific fire in a building just a block from the Howard Johnson that took the life of 5 people, including a 7 month pregnant woman. It was believed that Mark Essex was seen running from the building before the fire began.

Those days will live in my mind forever.
