New Virus?

I've been getting email attachments with no messages. The attach is labeled ATT... something or another. I deleted it fairly quickly and thought it wouldn't be a problem. However, I'm now getting messages from other people I haven't sent anything to saying they couldn't open the attach.

McAfee is telling me I'm clean.

These emails were all responses to emails I have in my files, so that makes me doubly suspicious.

Anyone have any ideas?

Okay, went to http://www.pandasoftware.com and they registered the BadTrans virus. The odd thing is that I had it without opening the attachments. Bad. Very bad. Anyway, the fix worked and now my computer is clean. One more reason to beware of strange emails.

I personally have all my email attachments sent to hotmail, and they scan it before it even gets to your computer. Twice someone has sent me a virus, and both times this person didnt know they had the virus.

Mickie,

Sent you a PM on this. My rant may offend some, so left it off the board.

virus

I originally posted this privately. I am not nice to M$ Outlook Express or Word, and that tends to piss some folks off. If they choose to continue supporting products that offer all the security of the Maginot Line in a blitzkrieg, well...

It seems, though, that Mickie is not the only victim. So here are my suggestions:
Mickie,
I'm going to guess that you use 0utlook Express. I haven't seen the specs on this new one (it's a revision of an earlier virus), but I suspect it uses imbedded scripts in HTML email. M$ seems to not care about security.

Turn off HTML, if you can. I don't know how. I haven't used OE since I learned to read. Better yet, get a text based mail client like Eudora (named for author Eudora Welty, d. 7/23/01, aged 92), or Forte Agent (my own choice-registered). Both are available for free download and use.

Agent allows me to decide whether to open an HTML mail. It also allows me to view the raw post, including attachments as plain text, complete with markups and any imbedded crap.

I seriously suggest you lose Outlook Express and M$Word. They have serious security issues. Every script kiddie in the land targets their known holes.
In the last week or so I've been hit 20-30 times with known viral attachments, and a couple of the badtrans variety. No harm. No foul. My text based reader lets ME determine whether to open even an HTML letter. I cannot stress enough the value of being able to view the raw message.
