New Vampire Tale

Hey All,

I just wanted to know I've started posting a new Vampire novel, The Afflicted. I wrote it about a year ago and then let it sit. I'm now revising and posting the chapters at a pace of one a week. The world of the story is the first I've taken on with an incestuous element, so that's been a new adventure; )

I've had a lot of fun working on this one and am pretty proud of my work. It is a novel, so the storytelling is more extended.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I have to agree with my fellow compatriots, the vampire genre has been way overdone. Sorry.

The funny thing is, I've never read a vampire novel (no Anne Rice, no Twilight). I've seen a few movies, I think it is inevitable.

I took the basic idea of vampires; no sunlight, strong powers, thirst for blood etc - and tried to build a fantasy universe around them. What I came up with is a symbiotic affliction that gives its hosts their powers - with certain downsides in return. The most analogous fiction universe I can think of is Anne McCaffrey's Crystal Singer series.

I've actually heard from a few readers already who told me they don't usually 'do' vampires, but they're glad they took a look because they are really enjoying it.

But - I totally understand if you're not so inclined. Only so many hours in a day, you know?

Brian Lumley's Necroscope took the symbiote approach if I remember. He also threw in a whole heap of espionage strangeness.

Vamps are very much a marmite thing at the moment. Some people can't get enough of them, while other people roll their eyes and wince at anything tall, dark, wangsty and Mary Sue/Gary Stuish.

I might take a look, but I'm very much in the hate camp unless it's a really different slant. And, of course, if it's a really original slant then the Twilight people won't like it and the people that would won't read it in the first place because it's 'just another overdone vamp story'.

Nope, not my thing.

Story from viewpoint of exotic euro vamp family with superpowers - a road far too well-travelled.

Fine for the fans, but unlikely to turn any of the haters.

Writing style seems okay. The details on the affliction is a bit too much of an info dump at the start. You'd be better parcelling that out later once the reader is drawn into the story or maintaining some more mystery by keeping your hand hidden on what the family is.

Good luck with the tale anyway.
