New UN Report on Global Warming - Can you say Moooo?

question for zeb

from the summary of report you cite: The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.[...]

The report concludes that, unless drastic changes are made, the massive damage done by livestock will more than double by 2050, as demand for meat increases.

---

sounds plausible. NOW: since humans create and maintain these herds, it follows that humans are a major cause of heightened CO2 emissions and a major contributor to the consequent global warming.

correct? (just want to get you on record, here :nana: ).

So you're saying that we(man) created cows, horses, etc.? Correct?

I guess wildebeest and impala farts don't count (lol).

Peace.

Or the more than 100 times as many deer in this country as there were when old Chris showed up here........

So... does this mean we need to kill and eat MORE cows faster...

or become Vegetarians?

That's because we eliminated the predators to save the livestock.

The Law of Unintended Consequences rears its ugly head again.

But I digress.

Ever notice how all these apocalyptic reports on the environment, e.g. automobiles, agriculture, human progress in general, always comes back to the same point.

Too damn many people!

Eliminate humanity and save the environment.

The line forms on the right for the suicide chambers.

It's called thinning the herd (lol).

Peace.

There are environmental extremists who believe that the herd needs to be thinned.

They don't mean the cows.

Watch it... that comment isn't well liked around here......

I speak from experience.....

Whoops! My bad.

(tiptoes through the verbal minefield).

A list of approved, non-inflammatory phraseology suitable for these discussions would make for an interesting thread.

Jus' sayin'.

Peace.

Now you're in trouble too, Roxy.

But you are right on the money.

Peace.

Cockroach Power!

They were here first, you know.

And they'll be the last, too.

Now I'm off to shop at 'Antennaes 'R' Us' (grin).

Peace.

A line from 'Wargames'....

'The dinosaurs roamed the earth for millions of years then mother nature just gave up on them, and those that survived were tiny little mammels hiding in the rocks. One of these days Nature will give up on us too and maybe starte over again with the bee's maybe.'

Bees are cool. I love bees. :cathappy:

zeb, sorry you're unable to answer a simple question about humans' responsibility for higher CO2 levels.

aeb:So you're saying that we(man) created cows, horses, etc.? Correct?

P: No, silly, i'm saying that humans 'make' the herds, i.e., breed and feed the herds and control their size)

i gather roxanne too, is unsure of an answer.

let me ask it simpler, in your terms: does this report show the influence of the International Gore-led Conspiracy against Capitalism?

(psst: next meeting this sat am at Sher's)

You still haven't answered my question and until you answer my question I find it impossible to answer your ambiguous question. I need a little clarification on your use of 'create'.

OK, but to take this a little bit seriously, before there were millions of cattle grazing all over the great American middle west, there were millions of buffalo.

I wonder if there are more cattle now then there were buffalo back then. And what the relative amount of methane generated was.

The bazillions of acres of corn (and wheat and soy beans etc) in the US used to be bazillions of acres of prairie grass. Corn and prairie grass both take CO2 out of the atmosphere and replace it with O2.

Do the 8 foot high stalks of corn produce more or less CO2 conversion than the 3-4 feet of grass that they replaced?

I like bees too, until they started building their hives in the walls of my house. Or under the porch or in the old oak tree where the swing is. ;)

Ah...and before we(man) came along there weren't herds of animals roaming the plains of North America?
