Hi guys, I love the site. I grew up stealing my fathers penthouse forum magazines, so my sexual formative years were enhanced by reading stories and letters more so than actual visual or physical stimulation. I am glad to have found a site here with so many stories under so many different categories.

I have been toying around with the idea of writing erotic stories myself for a couple years now because I have so many fantasies in my head ranging from somewhat normal to freakishly perverted.

The problem is that I am not a good writer. The extent of my writing skills is used for emails and message board posting. I am not trying to write these stories in a publishable manner either, but I do have a few questions to help me write them so they are readable and not too boring.

First question is, when I am writing an erotic story, how long is too long. The first story I am writing down is a fantasy situation I have in my head but it could go on and on for many pages. Is it better to find good stopping points and write it in parts, or just throw it all into one long story?

Second question is about dialogue. In this particular story that I am starting off with, it is very narrative, but I have occassionally thrown in some dialogue. Is that acceptable in this type of writing, or if it is a narrative story, should I write the whole thing that way?

And lastly, for now, is there a good place to find sexual synonyms? Most reputable thesaurus and dictionary sites dont include sexual words. I have found the list here on this site, but I was wondering if there are any other sites out there with more that you guys use. It gets really repetitive using cock and dick all the time and most of the ones for pussy are either too medical sounding or just sound awkward or childish in stories.

Thanks!

Welcome! I hope you'll find much to enjoy here. I'm sure some of the more established folk will be along to make you feel comfortable.

An excellent place to start!

The problem is that I am not a good writer. The extent of my writing skills is used for emails and message board posting. I am not trying to write these stories in a publishable manner either, but I do have a few questions to help me write them so they are readable and not too boring.

"Good writer" is a highly subjective term. If you can master the basics of grammar, spelling and punctuation, you may have enough to be "good". If you write a story to please yourself and possibly others, you may be a "good writer". Of course, striving to improve is a positive.

First question is, when I am writing an erotic story, how long is too long. The first story I am writing down is a fantasy situation I have in my head but it could go on and on for many pages. Is it better to find good stopping points and write it in parts, or just throw it all into one long story?

There are a lot of threads and essays around here you might look for to help you there. One rule I use is -- write until you get to the end of the story, then go back to look at the path you took to get there. Again, everything is subjective. Of course, there are rules of thumb for number of words to put into a story. Look through the story lists for the kind of stuff that you like, and use them as models.

Second question is about dialogue. In this particular story that I am starting off with, it is very narrative, but I have occassionally thrown in some dialogue. Is that acceptable in this type of writing, or if it is a narrative story, should I write the whole thing that way?

That can be a matter of taste. What person are you writing in (first or third -- "I, me, my, mine" or "His, hers, he, she"?). Again, read the stories you like most here and take them as guidelines. I like for people to talk, so I like dialog, but writing it can be tricky and requires attention.

And lastly, for now, is there a good place to find sexual synonyms? Most reputable thesaurus and dictionary sites dont include sexual words. I have found the list here on this site, but I was wondering if there are any other sites out there with more that you guys use. You'll find debate on that subject. I'd suggest diving into the Author's Hangout Thread Archives, as they are a veritable font of wisdom.

Use the words that arouse and appeal to you. Don't worry so much at this point what others think or you'll never get a word down on paper. Make use of the editors who offer their services via the forum or in the editor's list. Read a LOT and pay attention to what you like and don't like. Then write. Write and write and write. Learn to how ask for feedback and how to use it.

Then have fun. Good luck to you!

Welcome to the AH.

From what I read of your first post, it looks like you have the technical part of writing down pretty good.

And it sounds like you have the imagination to do so as well.

Now stop worrying about whether you're writing 'properly' and just write. As Voltaire said, "All styles are good, except the boring."

Hello and welcome!

I think it's fabulous you're thinking of your audience and what might please them. Having said that, however, I am of the camp who believes that for fiction you should write what you like and invite others along for the ride. It's impossible to please everyone all of the time; might as well please yourself. However...

... there are some great tools here at Literotica for writers to use. One is the Story Discussion Circle. Check out the forum and see if it looks like something you might like to participate in. There are also volunteer editors/proofers who will guide you in your writing.

And if you find writing out your stories isn't as enjoyable as you thought, you might also try "acting" them out on the "Sexual Role Playing Forum."

Best of luck!

I'll adress length. My Spy wore petticoats novel runs to over 22 Lit pages. Most of my works come in at the 3 to 6 page mark. I don't seem to suffer any for the verbosity.

Simply put, it's not the number of words, it's what you convey with them that counts. So tell the story in your head and don't worry about how long it takes you to do it. Once the story is done, you may end up pareing it down in edits, but that will be an authorly choice of what you want to do rather than an imperative.

Welcome to the AH. Best thing, jump in and get your feet wet.

Hello and welcome Monk :) There's not really anything else to add, as it's all been said before, but I just wanted to pop in and greet you. :)

Primary suggestion: Read stories by some of the main posters on the Authors' Hangout. Learn from them.

Length is not a problem as long as the story stays interesting throughout. "Interesting" can mean a lot of things and does not necessarily mean "action".
Second question is about dialogue. In this particular story that I am starting off with, it is very narrative, but I have occassionally thrown in some dialogue. Is that acceptable in this type of writing, or if it is a narrative story, should I write the whole thing that way?
Dialog is fine, particularly when it advances the plot or reveals the emotions/thoughts of the characters.

Try www.sex-lexis.com or male101.com/synonyms.html.

I'd go a bit further, Thelonius, good, inventive dialogue gives you a whole new means of wowing your readers.

The buzzword in writing circles is 'show not tell', and one of the best ways os showing is dialogue. It comes easier to some than to others, but like everything else, you'll get better the more you practice.

Welcome to AH, is it the name you like? Or the music? :)

Welcome to the AH and to Lit itself. Hope you have fun here. My best bit of advice that I can offer is to go to the Writer's Resources section and read some of the articles there (read mine if you like!). They're full of tricks and tips of the trade.

On this I'd urge caution. Pick two or three synonyms for each and stick to them. If you use too many, then it'll confuse the hell out of the reader and you run a greater chance of picking something that sounds ridiculously silly.

Have fun.

You seem to be able to form complete sentences and structure them in a readable way. That's better than some writers I've seen. :)

What you fill this ability with then is mainly a matter of topic. An erotic anecdote, or a debate post for a forum. The difference is not that big - language wise. So the question isn't really whether you are a good writer, I think, but whether you have any good stories to tell.

A warm welcome to the forum. That you use Thelonius Monk as a screen name is interesting, I love his 'round midnight'.

It was also Thelonius Monk that transitioned me from Jazz disk jockey to a talk radio show host one late night in Honolulu many years ago. I played a piece of his for the first time and it was so different the the classical mainstream jazz I usually played that I invited listeneres to call in a air their comments.

They did so in droves, for over two hours and the station owner heard and decided I should be a talk show host which was the beginning of a 25 year career in talk radio.

Good luck with your writing, whatever and however you decide to write....just write, write, write....

Try this How To by Quint...I Pushed My Pud Up Her Poop-Chute. It has severla synonyms, has very good advice on their use and is funny besides. You could probably find more like it in the How To section but the three by Quint are really good and amusing as well.

I Just Googled and found this Sexual Euphemisms - Food Porn. It's got some interesting stuff.

That's a pretty ambitious name to live up to. You happen to be something of an obsession of mine.

But then, we had a "Jesus Christ" posting here for a while, so you're in good company.

Welcome to Lit!

You're a fine one to talk, Doc- The character from Metropolis was a pretty cool cat himself. Demented and evil, of course- but he built a helluva woman :rose:

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

After I posted, I was exploring the site some more and found a bunch of good resources. I had never clicked on the Submit link before since I had nothing to submit, but when I did, I saw all the essays and writers resources.

I wasnt too concerned with how the story would be perceived when I first started writing it. I was just writing for my own benefit really. But then I thought I might wanna submit it someday so I wanted to make sure it would be good enough from a readers standpoint.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

As for the name... My usual online nickname was taken (Devils Advocate), so I was going through some of my old favorite names to use and I used to go by TheLonliestMonk playing online games. I do love that old school bebop jazz. My favorite is Charlie Parker, but for a name, Thelonius is a lot cooler. I really enjoy listening to these guys and their contemporaries, but I am no connoisseur, just a casual fan. I played sax in high school marching band and jazz band and when I get some extra cash, I want to buy a trumpet and learn that.

Believe it or not, I started a Yahoo group dedicated to Monk way back in January 2003. It's very exclusive. In all that time, I've been its one and only member and there's been exactly one posting.

Everyone's welcome to join. The link is here. We can use it as cover to talk about food sex.

P.S. Honest to God, when I chose my name, I really thought I'd made it up myself. It was only years later than I was rereading a book I'd read in high school and saw a mention of a movie from the '40's called, "The Return of Dr. Mabuse[sic]." I'd been carrying that name around in my subconscious for like 30 years.
