Ahhh...that takes me back to the days when I was in elementary school readying V.C. Andrews by the bucketfull. I think that that would be an interesting twist to something. You could set up their love first, have them be intimate a couple of times, all the while this woman is working on her family tree. Or, you could have one of her children doing a project for school. I can't think of why a grown woman would be doing a family tree (except for interest, there's always interest) but her child might have an assignment to find out their family tree all the way back to their grandmothers-grandmother. The woman could be helping the child put peices together, interviewing family members and the like, all the time dating this man she's been going steady with for a while. So once they find out that he's her half brother, do they break up, or do they decide not to care? The thing about incest stories is that most of the time the characters KNOW that it's incest...it would be hard to decide whether these characters would be the type to knowingly sleep with a brother/sister, or whether they would call it off. Either way I think that it's a good idea for a plot, and would love to see someone do it.

Well I'm sure she *could* be 21 and doing it, but at least in America I think most youths aren't very interested, and overall too lazy to do something like that unless it was for a school project. Being an American youth, I feel comfortable saying such a thing. Any other young Americans, please don't take offense.

A good number of Americans are Jews, as for why not French English German and the like, I would read a story about them but I wouldn't write one, just because I dont' really know much about them. It's sort of how all my stories are from a female perspective, I just have a problem putting thoughts into the head of someone unlike myself. I'm not saying that this story isn't do-able the way you want to do it, but I love these ideas on this board and every one I see I think to myself "How would *I* do it" and this one I would do as a young American mother with a child in school doing a project. I'm not insulting your idea, or trying to destroy it into something it wasn't meant to be, I'm just brainstorming.

I like that. Then you could elaborate on her distress at finding out that he was a relation AND that he'd kept it from her, and he could go on about how it didn't matter to him, why did it matter to her? etc...

Naughty brother!!
It would be soooo much fun to work in how they were related, too. After all, if they were relatively close in age then one of her parents (most likely her father, her mom could hardly have covered it up) could have feasibly cheated on the other.. just adds a little plot to your sizzle.
Or I suppose you could do the "He was your older brother but we weren't married so we gave him up for adoption thinking it was best for everyone" but I think it's been done.

Maybe she was raised by a single mother. A prominant man in town, maybe the mayor or some other position, maybe a minister...anyways maybe he is their father. The son was raised by the father and his mother in their big house on the hill with a million and one luxeries...the girls mother had a short lived affair with the mayor, way back when, just a couple of nights together. He paid her off, not wanting anyone to know that he'd fiddled around with her. The main girl could have grown up in relative poverty, her mother using the payoff on drugs or alchohol or the like, and is flattered to death when the mayors son asks her out. Maybe the way HE found out is that after he's seen this girl a couple of times, his father confesses to him that they are related, and must cut off their relationship. Our hero doesn't care, wants to keep being with her, related or not. They go out together for many years, and move away from their hometown. Then later down the road she is doing a family tree and looking up her boyfriends family, and finds some things that make her think that they might be related. Maybe she finds some pictures of the mayors family that look an awful lot like her, and she asks around town and finds out that her mother (long since dead) dallied with the mayor around the same time that she, the heroine, was concieved.
I apologize for using hero and heroine if that's not what you think that they should be called = )

I do think I've read a few stories on the rich/poor though. What if her mother was of a different race than her father..
(Not that I personally condemn interracial relationships, just.. that would make it that much more difficult for her to figure out, right?)

Perhaps the author could start out with a scene between the mother and father. I'm thinking it could be hot enough for a separate story entirely.

I think that I will. Starting it right now. I like the idea of a prologue (god help my spelling) but do you think that the reader should know that the main characters are related, or find out with the girl? Maybe the prologue could be the last chapter, sort of a bonus. What do you think?

Perhaps write the prologue independent of the story, and then try reading it both ways to see which is the most effective. It's a shocker to find out with the girl, on the other hand anticipation is a wonderful incentive if you know ahead of time and are just waiting for her to catch on.. hmm, very helpful right!
