I posted a similar note to this in the Story Feedback forum but I think it belongs here. I tried to post to the Author's Hangout but my post never made it. This is my second try.
My first story (Secrets) has been accepted. I am amazed at the number of times (28.5K+) it has been read in the last 24 hours. I had no idea that there were that many readers on this site. I wasn't ready for that but I am pleased.
I have received seven public comments and 25 Anonymous responses. Most are good but there are some real weirdos out there. I have been praised, reviled, condemned, insulted, and berated. I am not complaining, I am just commenting.
The three that didn't like my story apparently took the time to carefully read every word of it. One is sending me to hell and a second one is questioning my morals and my right to be here on this earth.
The third one takes off after my characters as if they are real people. Its a real world out there but he/she seems to think that this is reality.
I don't know what the Rating means. Will someone please explain. I can't find any mention of it anywhere. I am having problems navigating around this site but I guess I'll get used to it.
I would appreciate feedback from the authors.

Thanks for any help,

Kathi

:) :rose: :rose: Hi, Kathi and welcome to Lit. and to the AH. This is a good place to hang out when you need an excuse for not writing. I tried your URL and it took me to the home page, not to your story.

Consider it to be high praise when people complain about the morals etc. of your characters, as if they were real people. If you can make them seem real, you have done a really good job. 28,500 views doesn't mean that many people have read your story; it just means that many have clicked onto it, and sometimes one person might look many times and be counted many times.

Seven PC and 25 anon feedback seems exceptional and 28K views in one day is also very good. You mujst be doing something right to get that many responses.

People vote from one through five with "1" meaning it really sucked and "5" meaning it was great. A non-vote doesn't get included in the voting and the rating is the average of all the votes cast. Actually, a vote of "1" is frequently from someone who felt malicious and wanted to hurt your score. These people are commonly referred to as "trolls". Some votes of "1" are honest expressions of opinion although most stories aren't bad enough to rate that.:rose:

Kathi,

As I just mentioned in another similar thread, I think this particular genre hits too close to home for some people, and the more realistic your story and characters are, the more they will relive their pain. Their reaction will be to return some of that pain with vile feedback and low votes.

Why do they even read the stories, if it hurts them so much? My guess is that they're looking for the story with the ending that they crave: probably where the transgressing wife suffers for her sins, realizes what she's lost by her betrayal and so on and so forth.

I think that if you're going to write stories in this genre, you'll just have to realize that this is the kind of response you'll be provoking in some people and accept that. Your only alternative is to disable voting, feedback and other avenues of communication.

Thanks Lou. I guess I wasn't prepared for those type of responses. I was ready for people to criticize my writing but not me.
It never occured to me that anyone but readers interested in erotica would read the stories on this site. My naivete showed when I received negative responses from those who seemed to enjoy the opportunity to rag on someone rather than to enjoy the opportunity to read erotica.
I feel better now that I have read the other writers' posts. Some of these anonymous responses are probably sent word for word to other writers, regardless of what they write.

Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

Hi, Kathi:

I just read your story and I'm surprised that you'd get such vitriolic responses. Maybe because your story is in the "Loving Wives" category ("Tales of adventurous married women & their mates"), those particular readers expected to see a more positive story on a husband & wife relationship rather than an adulterous one. Scanning through the categories, I didn't see anything else that your story would fit into better, though.

You asked for feedback in your original message; I don't know if you meant feedback on your story as well, so I'll send you my comments on your story separately.:D

Thanks for the comments. I just read your story and I thought it was great. I like a lot of detail and you gave plenty. I'm not a fan of rape stories but from a purely objective point of view you told a great tale. Nice twist with the roommate. I think I would have washed her off after the anal and before I offered her to the roommate but that's just me.

Kathi, I found your story to be very well written and highly erotic. Thank you.

As far as the others... George Carlin once said. "Just think about how stupid the average person is and then realize that half of the population is stupider(more stupid) than that.

Link failed.

Kathi,
clicked on the link for your story and it failed. i too am trying to learn to navigate this site. *S*

So far only part of one of story has been posted to date.

Yes, i had one who continues to post me privately and criticise me.. this one thinks i'm abused.. i enformed her to continue reading as this is an on going story.. It's an examination of my six years with Biker. So one portion alone does not give the entire picture. And why is it that even in commenting people seem to have a rude tone? Either do not read it or take from it what you can.. and just because one does not understand my choices should not make either side wrong...ok.. enough of my complaining. *L*

slave:rose:

Hope my link works.

Not Alone

Hi Kathi, just wanted you to know your not alone. I, too, just posted my first story. You did much better on hits and responses than I did. The one feedback I did get accused me of impersonating a female and was particularly scathing about content and the fact that I screwed up the description ( which I did but I was so exhausted the nite I finally posted it I missed it). I guess you can't please everybody. Considering that this guy gave me the lowest rating possible I guess I'm not doing too poorly.

Congratulations on your first post,

Ladybatt

Kathi-
I have just submitted my second story (1st was a crowd pleaser but this one is nonconsensual/reluctant) and I am a bit apprehensive about my feedback should it get posted- not just bona fide author feedback but also the offers that may pour in for offers of fantasy fulfillment...fortunately I have a filter mode permanantly ensconced in my brain and can concentrate on the omments that pertain to my writing...not my ass! Good luck and keep up the writing, your story is great.

I got one lady that thought I was a female! Which I considered a huge compliment.

I wouldnt take the criticism so hard. Your bound to get a bad egg eventually along with the good ones. I got the odd feedback, which left me scratching my head wondering why this guy bothered to read my story if he had no intrest on the subject matter which I clearly labled in the discription.

Don't get me wrong...I'm all for constructive critism, but this was such a vehement attack...so scathing, I figured it would discourage readers from even looking at the story. I guess some people are happiest when putting others down...you just can't allow yourself to be brought down by them.
