I just saw something on headline news that says Pope John Paul is adding new prayers (or changing prayers) to the rosary to boost devotion to the virgin mary. Interesting....

Does anyone know anything about this or have a link that gives more info? I'm an ex catholic, but always loved the devotions to the virgin mary.

Sorry darlin, i dont have any info on it, as this is the first i've heard of such a thing...but i find it funny that it wasnt until Vatican II, like, 40 years ago, that the Catholic Church even came to a general concencus on the Holyness of Mary.

I went to Catholic school, but i'm Greek Orthodox, and i'm just not a big fan of the Catholic church right now, with everything that's going on...

Don't get me wrong...I think the church is full of shit, which is why I left the faith something like 13 years ago. But the devotions themselves were beautiful and actually what led me to goddess worship...many actually worship the goddess as mary.

I hadn't heard of it prior to flipping to headline news tonight either...just thought it sounded interesting. I don't know how many catholics are on the board, but there seem to be a number of christians, so I figured my odds were decent.

Here's what I found........

The Polish Pope proposed Catholics should meditate on five more events in Christ's life in the new rosary, adding a further layer of spirituality to the prayer.

The rosary is made up of prayers including the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be.

It was composed of three groupings of mysteries for a current total of 15 mysteries. They were grouped into the joyful mysteries, events in Jesus's early life, the sorrowful mysteries, revolving around his passion and death, and the glorious mysteries, involving his resurrection.

TIME TO REFLECT

The Pope said the rosary should now be made up of four groupings and that Catholics should also reflect on what he called "the mysteries of light," revolving around events in Jesus's public ministry.

He singled these out as Christ's baptism in the Jordan, his first miracle in which he is said to have turned water into wine, his proclamation of the Kingdom of God, his Transfiguration when he revealed his divinity to three apostles on Mount Tabor, and his institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper on the night before he died.

The rosary beads, which Catholics use to keep track of the prayers, will not change. The rosary will still consist of a cross and about 60 beads since only one set of mysteries is contemplated at a time and usually on different days of the week.

The Pope, elected on October 16, 1978, signed a new 60-page apostolic letter, called "Rosarium Virginis Mariae" (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary), in which he explained the changes.

The pontiff, who is very devoted to the rosary and the Madonna, said the new additions were meant to give the old prayer "fresh life and enkindle renewed interest" in it.

The rosary has a long tradition, dating back to the early years of the Church. It began taking its current shape at the start of the second millennium.

Its current form was in practice for many years before it was officially fixed by Pope Pius V in 1569.

In his apostolic letter, the Pope said he hoped a renewed interest in the rosary would help the cause of peace.

He said he hoped it would assist "a millennium which began with the terrifying attacks of September 11, 2001, a millennium which witnesses every day in numerous parts of the world fresh scenes of bloodshed and violence..."

The Pope said he hoped the rosary would also help bring peace to the Middle East, saying Catholics could not recite it "without feeling caught up in a clear commitment" to the Holy Land.

*I don't make it a habit to look for things from the Church of Rome. :D

i was raised episcopalian....we dont worry about this stuff...hehe

Yeah, i honestly don't mind much for this stuff either...its just...it seems like the entire religion is corrupted...being Christian, i hate to see that. Catholicsm has always had this "Holier than thou" thinking (no pun intended). And now, more and more people are leaving the religion...its sad to see. Because at its base, it's a perfectly well functioning part of Christianity...they just gotta work on letting the priests get married...

hehehe...very true. The episcopalian/anglican church is much more looser....we actually want our priests to be married so they don't screw the choirboys....

same with the Greek Orthodox, and hell, ALL eastern orthodox churches. Our priests get married, have kids, all kinds of good stuff. And personally, i dont think it takes away from their devotion to God or Christ. I mean, in my life, i've had three priests, two of which were wicked cool guys, who i liked alot, but now we've got this old school bishop in training guy, who's got the beard, dresses all in black...i'mm tellin ya, he's suspect, that guy.

p.s. love your tits:D

A lot of that "mysteries" stuff went over my head. Guess it's because I never confirmed.

Grin, robin williams describes being epsicopal as "catholic lite...same religion, half the guilt"

I also think the catholic church needs to let women into the priesthood...and let them marry for gods sake (wow, didn't mean the double entendre, but I'll let it stand)

There were a lot of things Catholicism changed with Vatican II . . . up until then, the Mass was in Latin.

If you think the Church is uptight now . . . Jesus.

Yeah, i know it. The whole change over to the vernacular from Latin, Vatican II did alot of good things, making the church more accesable (sp?) to everyone, but it just took so DAMN LONG for it all to happen...

Well, that's the problem with being Catholic, every couple hundred years they change something, just when you are getting used to it.
