Microsoft released the new version of IE today - 6.0

Scarily, it is the most stable version of the software I've EVER used. It's handling plugins and such way better than previous versions, and its caching wicked fast.

I wonder if it's secretly corroding the circuits in my computer or something - this is too good to be true!

i might try this ive managed to mess up my browser so i was going to have to reinstall it anyway

im scared of using any new version of anything released by mircosoft though i usually wait till its been patched 4 or 5 times :)

Normally, so am I, but my browser was so bollocksed up that I had to reinstall anyway, and I'm very glad that I did.

sounds intriguing...

Please let us know if you experience any problems. I try to avoid anything too new these days in temrs of software or especially, medicine (I love those ads for the big new drug one year, and then two years later, the ads are all from ambulance chasing lawyers looking to recruit the folsk who fell for the first round of ads). So keep us posted if your system blows, or sucks, or something less satisfying.

I heard IE6 does not work with some websites cuase they use java and IE6 does not have Java incorporated into it.

Also its gonna wipe out all your cookies.

Microsoft has supported Java with a seperate, downloadable Virtual Machine since IE 4

And as to the cookies...I wipe them after each use anyway, so this just makes it easier.

I heard Microsoft isnt supporting Java this time around. the intend to support their ACTIVE X instead. IT will be up to each website to change their content if they want it to look good in IE6.

Microsoft didnt wan to pay a liscencing fee to SUN MICROSYSTEMS to add JAVA support.

Could you elaborate, thanks? I always wipe my cookies & history, too.

Actually, it is erroring out, but I've asked my IT group to chase down the rumors that there is a plug in you can get for Java.

Since downloading IE6...

I've only found two things that are different.

1) My machine is now slower when I navigate around.

2) It changed all my fonts (in the address bar, underneath icons in menus and on the desktop to a font called "Abadi MT Condensed Light".

The first is not a major problem but does anyone know how I can change the font to Times Roman?

I've been to Control Panel/Fonts and highlighted "Times Roman" clicked "Done" and rebooted but I'm still stuck with "Abadi MT Condensed Light".

It's too small to read in comfort and the letters are stretched making it even more difficult.

Aprt from those two points everything is fine so far...

:)

That may be the problem.

Compatible, shmapatible...it was designed for XP. My understanding is that it works well with 2000, ME and XP, and only OK with 98.

I'll do a little research though. I have a 98 machine around here somewhere...

Thanks. Yes I read the "blurb" before I downloaded but decided to take a chance anyway. It will have to be downloaded sooner or later.

Don't go to too much trouble I can always upgrade to a higher version of Windows...

Right click on the desktop, go to "Properties" go to the "Appearance" tab. Scroll through the schemes and select one, or go to "Item" and scroll down to "Icon" select it. Then in the "Font" box, scroll down to you see "Times new roman" select it and hit the "OK" button.

Thanks Snuggle Bunny...

Copied from Snuggle Bunny's Post:

That worked a treat.

Now to do something about the speed but as Bob Peale says it might be because of the 98 Version of Windows I'm running on.

**Now I wonder what will happen if I push this little button over here!!!**

There are plugins you can get to support Java in 6.0, and it will support Java if you are upgrading from a previous version (it uses the earlier Java support plugin).

The licensing issue is just an excuse to drop Java support. M$ hates Java because they cannot control it, and because it is cross platform (both hardware and OS) so they do everything they can to undercut it. They come out with an alternative language C# (C Sharp) and an alternative internet API (M$ .NET - vaporware)

How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb? None, they declare darkness to be the new standard.

thanks, stg
