New here

One of my favorite things to do in any of my stories is to invent bands and songs. I used to cite real music, but over the past few years I've noticed it's a lot more fun to just have my characters mention hit songs that don't really exist.
I have five albums' worth of songs, four or five fully written out.

Female-fronted symphonic metal. Bizarre that the niche writer has niche musical tastes :sneaky:

But I do enjoy fictional companies, bands, brands, etc. in what I read. I read a lot of sci-fi, so I'm always pleased when someone comes up with something really interesting and fleshes it out a bunch. Good on you!

I came back to read how this thread went, and had a good laugh. @IsenRae, we're all full of shit. I left a couple of comments on your episodes, but take any feedback with a grain of salt - you are here to find your own voice. Some of what we say will be helpful, and some not. One specific suggestion that I would make (it's probably in one of the help guides you've been pointed to) is to find a good beta reader or two if you can. I have a couple of kind souls who are particularly good at asking obvious questions like 'what colour was her dress?', 'what was he wearing,' and so on, as well as warning me when my characters are just being weird in terms of their behaviour, or choosing strange positions to flick the bean, or a bunch of other things that are outside my own experience. Plus, to criticise my musical choices.... Anyway, welcome, and always remember that this is supposed to be fun. Just like sex....

I read your comments and just like here I loved them. There should really be reactions so I can heart the comments that inspire me!

I think you're right and I need to find beta readers. There are things I missed and people pointed out. Would be nice to not have to freak out and try editing after the fact.

Old prof's guide mentioned it could be awhile for my edit to be implemented as well.

Hopefully I can find some betas

Thank you

Thanks for taking it so kindly! I think that you could consider *not* editing, or at least waiting until you have time and space before doing so, and then only making critical interventions at a few places. I had a fair few comments on my first stories pointing out things that I could have done better, and I must admit that I did freak out a bit and eventually put in edits, but I think that it's also good to be able to look back after a while at your first works and celebrate how much you've grown since then (as well as acknowledge the good things in the work - and there are plenty in your case).

In terms of beta-readers - the best advice that I have is to find some authors that you really resonate with and see if you can get some of their time, after convincing them that you actually do care about what they write and will be really respectful of their own time. There are plenty of friendly souls here, although not everybody has had a good experience being a beta reader.

Welcome, IsenRae! fair warning, this place can actually be life altering... I'm a prime example. I moved three time zones thanx to a woman I met here. that was over twenty years ago and yet I'm back here and single all over again.

Rereading that, what I said is ambiguous.

No one accused me of writing with AI help, but they did accuse @IsenRae of doing so.

for whatever reason, I haven't had the AI suspicion creep up on me yet. having now said it out loud, watch my next submission get flagged...

Yeah - given the story that the accusation was leveled at was one that (counts on fingers - uses second hand) six other authors saw the error-strewn and inconsistent early snippets of, it wouldn’t have been hard to refute if they had actually reported me.

Google Docs on iOS barely has spellcheck (it will underline words, but you can’t run a spellcheck on a whole document - or at least I don’t know how to) let alone AI-suggested text.

A lot can happen in 20 years. Even two lifetimes.

I collect female-fronted metal bands like I collect anthro species to write about 😁

It is epic. It is so epic. Disenchanted by Ignea chokes me up every time.

I'm thining about publishing some of the songs I've written here, but I don't know if that would go in poetry or what? Might just save up a bunch and post them as a full album once I have it finished. 🤷‍♀️
