The one thing I would add to Liar's post is read the submission guidelines first. It could save you some time and confusion.

A good thing to do before submission might be to decide what category they'll be in, then check out a few stories from the top list for that category so you can get an idea of what people like. There have been a lot of posts from people that were shocked their first submission was greeted in a certain way. Some of the fans in specific categorires here are a bit...quirky (that's such a nice way to say they are bat-shit crazy). There are volunteer editors here (hundreds of them) who will happily look at your story and offer advice (either on grammar or on general plot).

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions. There are authors here who range from complete newbies (like myself) to ones with tons of stories (even published). Most of them are happy to offer advice.

Although I do have one peice of advice my mentor FtF told me on startin here...After you put in your first submission bookmark the page that comes up showing the story...That way you can quickly and easily go back and check on the status of all of your stories...Personally I tend to check daily and respond quickly to people leaving Public Comments (if they leave a name) so I don't forget...

As for dealing with the mad asylum, it's somewhat like that around my home. lol ( I own a small ranch with lots of pets and animals). I have also been a moderator at a couple of messageboards where decorum and diplmacy were necessary to keep the regulars from rioting. *Chuckle*
