Avatars, pics--and a whole lot more--are explained in our handy FAQ sticky (it's also permanently "stuck" near the top of the main How To forum page, if you happen to lose that link). I'd suggest at least browsing through the list of FAQs in there and bookmarking it so you know how to find the answers to the questions you'll inevitably have as they arise.
A good rule of thumb is to always check out the sticky threads at the top of each forum when you first arrive. They usually answer common questions, clue members in on forum-specific rules and etiquette, etc. It's valuable to have that knowledge under your belt prior to posting for a variety of reasons.
