New Game Idea. It's changed since the last time.
Alright. It looks like everything that I am taking part in at the moment has died down considerably (which really makes me sad, because that Harry Potter RP was really fun) As a result I have become increasingly bored and have decided, that if there is sufficient interest I wouldn't mind starting a role play. Here is my idea:
I have actually been considering trying to start a Fate/Stay Night RP here for about half a year, but thought that I wouldn't get sufficient interest, because outside of japan (and apparently 4chan), neither the anime, nor the original game have all that much of a following, as far as I know. Because of that I thought that the fact that not many people know what I am talking about would discourage people from joining, but I assure you that it really isn't all that hard to follow.
History of Fate/Stay Night
Fate/Stay Night was originally a hentai (anime porn) game. Right there we have pretty much guaranteed that it is perfect for this specific purpose. It was later adapted to an Anime format, of which I believe there were 24 episodes in total, all of which can be found on Youtube (the first episode is really slow, but don't let that discourage you.) It was met with a whole lot of success in japan, so much so that it was met with the release of another game titled Fate/Hallow Anexeria, or something equally forgettable that was widely viewed as little more than a fan disk. You don't really need to know any of this in order to participate in the game, it is just some interesting background into where I found the story and the plot.
Very Basic Plot Summary
If you read this, and don't want to read the rest of it (which is understandable. I seem to have rambled) You should be able to just skip to the end no problem.
Current Day. 7 Magi summon the spirits of heroes from old myths and legends to do battle and win the Holy Grail to secure a wish. The rules of this "Holy Grail War" are that normal people can't know it is being played, and other than that, fight until you win. A mage and their servant are usually of opposite Genders...for obvious reasons if you consider the original media. More in depth information can be found below.
In Depth Plot Information
Basic Plot of Fate/Stay Night
The basic plot of Fate/Stay Night is that every 10 years, an event is held in the magical community, called "The Holy Grail War". 7 Magi participate in this event by summoning heroic spirits to do battle for them. In Fate/Stay Night, our hero, Emiya Shiro (Or for you Japanese purists, just switch the names around for your last name first) is a no skill mage who really is only skilled at magically discovering how things work, and then fixing them, is unknowingly pulled into this war when he witnesses a battle between an Archer and a Lancer class servant. He unknowingly summons his own servant and proceeds to kick ass, while trying to figure out what this Holy Grail war is.
The Holy Grail War
Is a battle waged by 7 magi masters, and the servants that they wield (one servant to every master). The end goal is to eliminate all other master/servant groups, and be the first one to reach the Holy Grail, a mythic chalice that is said to grant the victor any wish that they desire. Both servants and masters are said to get a wish from this device, which is why both of them are battling to win. It is also said that if the holy grail is won by someone who is a coward and did nothing but run away from battles until the end, that it will unleash destruction upon the world.
The important thing about the Holy Grail war is that it is a SECRET. It is sort of like fight club, the first rule of fight club is that you don't talk about fight club. The mundane people of today's society aren't allowed to find out about the Holy Grail war...well, they aren't allowed to find out and live anyway. If a battle is going on and a mundane stumbles upon it, servants are usually smart enough to prioritize taking out the mundane before winning their battle.
Servants
They have physical forms.
Servants are heroic spirits. The kinds of things that legends are made out of. Examples could be King Arthur, or any of the knights of the round table, Hercules, Beowulf, Robin Hood, Odysseus, or if you watch the popular HEROES show, you could even say Takezo Kensei (from the legend that Hiro keeps referring to) was an option. These heroes would have the heroic fighting prowess that we know of from legend, and would also have one supreme magical attack, known as their "noble phantasm", which is most often a brutally obvious hint as to who the noble Phantasm actually is.
These Heroic spirits are given 7 classifications, which they use rather than names to hide any weakness that might appear if their opponent knew who the heroic spirit actually was. These classes are as follows:
Archer - Actually doesn't use bows in the series but easily could. In the series Archer class warriors have amazing eyesight, and usually create their weapons with magic.
Lancer - They use lances. Famous lancers could include Hector from the Iliad, his noble phantasm could be something related to the trojans, since Hector is the trojan's hero.
Saber - Sword Wielders. Inigo Montoya, King Arthur, Joan of Ark.
Caster - Magic users. Merlin, Gandalf, Morgan Le Fay...you get the picture
Assassin - Exactly what the name implies. In the series they used a samurai who was very similar to the batosai from Rurouni Kenshin.
Berserker - Brutes. Hercules, Goliath, the kind of guys who were really strong, and didn't so much need weapons.
Rider - Not so much physically strong. Think of the kind of tricky trapper heroes, such as Odysseus who used their brains more than their brawn. They are good with traps, and attacking from a range without being detected.
These heroic spirits are attached to their mage masters through a set of three command spells that manifest themselves on the master's hand in an interesting looking design. These spells can be used to make the servant do something that they normally wouldn't, or summon them into battle from a great distance away, but once they are gone, the servant is no longer attached to that master, and may find a new one. Similarly, if the master is slain, the servant has a short period of time in which it can seek a new master, who has had their servant slain (or in the case of caster, become a master themselves.)
Masters and servants are usually of opposite genders...because that was where the hentai aspect of the game came in.
Noble Phantasms
These are the ultimate attack of a servant, usually named for a great achievement, legendary weapon, or attack style that is specific to the user. For Example, King Arthur and Excalibur, Odysseus and his Trojan Horse, Inigo and his six fingered sword, Hercules and his 12 trials, Icarus and his melting wings, so on and so on. They are a trump card that if used can most of the time end a battle, but if used unsuccessfully usually give away the user's true identity leaving an opening for a weakness to arise, because, after all, all of these heroes did die at some point.
Bluemage's Game Plot Information
Alright, now on to my game. Because the Holy Grail war happens every 10 years, you don't need to know very much about the series, and really I probably explained more than I needed to. My game would be a new Holy Grail war, with new characters, happening in a location that I haven't yet decided on, but probably New York, because it has Central park, as well as a lot of places where there will be lots of people all of the time, making choosing your location of battle as interesting as the battle itself. Other than that, it is really going to follow the idea of the Holy Grail war pretty closely. Pretty much a race to win the holy Grail and that wonderful wish...or for you heroics out there, to make sure that no one evil who would wish to rule the world, or would kill off a whole lot of people with the grail do that. I suppose I will eventually need at least 14 dedicated players to get this game really rolling unless we had some sort of setup where someone played a master, and someone else's servant, which now that I think of it, isn't all that bad of an idea...
In any case, that idea probably took me about an hour longer than it needed to for me to pitch it. Tell me what you think
THE NEW IDEA
10 Years before the game takes place, the war and wish were won by someone who thought that the war was taking too much of a tole on people who weren't participating in the battle. Because of this he wishes that there will never be another holy Grail war. 10 Years go by and once again 7 'Heroes' are summoned (I didn't cover this earlier, but for a villainous character, a more villainous legend could be summoned, like Medusa, or the Argus or something.) Suddenly magi who would otherwise have no desire to participate in the Holy Grail war, and Magi who hadn't taken the time to prepare, are pulled into the mystery of what is happening and why the war is taking place. It also allows magi with less heroic attempts to gain their own summons, people who would rob banks, or do the sort of thing that some of these SRPs are famous for are given the power to do just that, and some people who had always believed that the war was coming again might crop up to throw a wrench into things.
To me, this idea seems quite a bit more realistic, since I don't have to worry so much about coming up with a battle system to decide who wins, since that isn't the major focus of the game. It also allows for divided groups of good guys, bad guys, and people who are completely neutral and just want to have their old lives back.
