Folks

I would like to go for a new Digital SLR Still Camera. I look forward to have this one by Thanks Giving Day. Need suggestions.

Camera Suggestions- here comes a small novel!

As someone who uses DSLRS almost everyday for a living, the two I like most are the Canon 30D and the Canon XSI Rebel. I was never a Canon girl back in the 90's when I was shooting angsty teenage black and whites. I had an old minolta for that. But since 2004 when I went digital and full time as a photographer I've learned to love canon camera bodies. I've tried others and they just aren't the same somehow.

I have a crazy expensive camera provided by my company for my day job. It's not mine I just get it until I'm fired! BUT For the photography I do at night, in the local music scene, and for anything where I'm shooting documentary style I like the Canon Rebel XSI. I bought it because I needed a big file size and high ISO for shooting in low light and didn't want to go over the 1000$ mark. It gives you 12 megpixels and 1600 ISO. I also bought it because it was light, compact, and no problem to hang around my neck for long periods of time. I took the company camera for a ten hour wedding once, and never again. My shoulders were sore from the weight of it!

I know they just came out with a new digital Rebel, but I like mine and am in no hurry to upgrade.

How about these 7 models :

Nikon D5000, D 3000, Canon EOD Rebel T1i, XSi, Xs, Sony Alpha DSLR-A230, A330. I've been using arround 3 non-SLR cameras till now - mostly PowerShots and Cybershots and now i feel it is tim to move on to SLR. Im not into anything beyond 750$ since i would look at something like an entry model SLR since im not a professional photographer like you, but an enthusiast and photography lover. Please compare these and give me a fair idea Lizzy. Thanks in advance.

I am mostly looking at Nikon and Canon now. Olypmus i found is cheap, and Pentax too, but the image quality of Nikon stands out. Sony too is cheap and have offers with Telephoto lens..quiet tempting..but rather i would look at Canon Rebel and Nikon. Hey guys, i need some suggestions.

I'm a big fan of Nikons. Had a D70 and upgraded to a D300 this past summer. I love it. I have a friend with a D80 and she really likes that. I think the D90 (and the D5000) have HD video now, too.

The nice thing about Nikon (and to a slightly lesser extent, Canon) is that you can use almost any Nikon lens on these cameras. I have a couple 20-year-old lenses that I use occasionally.

Check dpreview.com for very detailed reviews (along with comparisons to similar cameras) and message boards.

Good Luck!

I'm quite happy with my Canons, and for someone just starting out, you can usually get a really good deal on a package with two zoom lenses. Great for beginners, and still useful for everyday work if you move up to the tighter precision of fixed lenses.

Thanks Randy...im goin through dpreview and seems itz a very informative and contemporary and updated site compared to other site who does comparisons. Thanks a lot and im lookin at Nikon, but price tag worries me, when compared to Canon. Anyway, i will update you soon.

Quiet right there Tio, since im starting off into the realms of SLR, i would love to go for an entry model than a 2.5k price tag. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've always personally liked Canon. Something in the Rebel series is usually a good deal, the XS or XSi. But something to consider that I haven't seen mentioned is the Panasonic DSLR. The G1 is a very nice light body and the lenses are manufactured by Leica, which is THE company for glass.

Thanks Blaze...and yes Leica is THE company for glass. But as you can see mostly the entry level SLR purchases are for Canon due to the quality and price tag, im looking in that direction. I would die for a Nikon, but price for an entry level is a bit on higher terrain. But again, thanks a lot for this great piece of info. Keep posting.

Well the reason I suggested it is the last time I checked I think it might only be about $100 more than a D60 which is about as entry level as I would go on Nikon's line

Yes...you are right sir...the entry level competition is more than mid range or high end...lol. More sales are for entry levels since buyers are more in that range and a professional guy who has good experience would know what he needs and he would only go for his specific mode. Thanks again.

Folks....it is time for purchase..and which store would you recommend...if that is normal store or better if it is online ? I've a list of online stores like Buy.com, Deals2buy.com, frys.com, amazon.com, costco & walmart. How about eBay ? im bit sceptical about them though..So, please someone suggest me - if it should be from a store, then which one OR if that is through online, which one.....

Canon XSI or Nikon D70. Hands down, best entry-level cameras.

Nikon makes the better body, Canon has the better glass/mounting. Then again, if you can afford nice Canon Glass, why would you get a Digital Rebel and not a 5-7D?

I'm out of the game (cars take too much of my time), but you can get some outrageous camera deals if you follow slickdeals.net.

LINK Right now Amazon has:
Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) + Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
Total Before Tax: $632.97 (You'll see the adjusted price in the cart, after adding both items and making sure you're purchasing FROM AMAZON.COM)

wow.....this is quiet informative and thanks a lot dude. ANd im checking this link right now. I was infact going for Nikon 3000 D or Canon Rebel XSi. Anyway, let me have a look arround. T

Either way, make sure you actually go into a store and hold them vs. just looking at specs. Focus them manually, play with the interface and see if you like how it navigates.

It really comes down to preference, the DSLR world is very competitive in terms of value.

yes...i bet the DSLR world is competitive and crazy..lol. And what i am lookin at now is Nikon D3000 and would that be a good one for me ?

The shadow and mid-tone range on the Nikon D90 is impossible to beat at the price point. I got mine and then picked up some used F2.8 pro Nikon glass for a nice pro rig for way less money.

Online I would order from these places:
Adorama (NYC)
Beach Camera (NJ)
Sammy's Camera (Hollywood)
Canoga Camera (Canoga Park CA)

Big selection of Used lenses at Adorama and KEH

Oh, and my four light strobe kit from Alien Bees (Paul Bluff) is the shitz.

Now just find some rope bunnies.... and it's time to give Maplethorpe a run.

wow..once again..very informative and thanks a lot Paul. I checked in Beach but would love to see something from either Vegas or LA since im at that side of US. Anyway, i will update you on this. But what about Nikon D 3000 ? your view ?

Good news guys...i've brought one and waiting for the delivery. It's a Nikon 3000 D and additionally i've some UV Filters, tripod and stuff. I will post some pics after i work on with it. Thanks a lot for the wonderful info you guys shared to this novice....cheers and keep in touch. I think Lit needs an informative thread like this to share photography techniques and pics and stuff..be it nude or non-nude. Photography is an art and should be shared between like-minded folks. So keep in touch guys....
