One of my computer systems at my small business has been relagated to mostly clerical and musical duty. I use it to play CD's and MP3's for backgound sound. However, my business partner thinks we should upgrade the speakers.
Now I know a good amount about software and most hardware but practically nothing about speakers.

The system is a P2 (2 years old) running windows 98 with 32 meg of memory. The speakers are the same ones which came with the system (store bought at Circuit City).

What brand or type of speakers would be good for an upgrade? What about the sound card, would it need to be upgraded also? I would like to keep the cost under $100.

Amplified speakers, or a "boom box" with a "line-in" input are the best bet. (I use the latter)

The sound card just doesn't generate enough power for decent sound. Unless you upgrade to a very expensive sound card with built in amplifier for the speaker output, the speakers have to do the amplification.

Radio Shack or most other electronics stores have a wide selection of PC Speakers. The only thing you can do, is look at the specifications on the boxes and choose the best quality for the lowest price.

Since you are using this particular system primarily as an office sound system, then an audio amplifier with the same sort of speakers you would put on your stereo will give you better sound than any PC speakers.

To meet your $100 budget, You might check Thrift stores for a used stereo system that the Aux or line-in function worrks even if the tuner portion doesn't. If the tuner function works as well, then that's a bonus.

Check out Boston Acoustics.. not a big footprint... but a great sound!
