New Comment System BETA Rollout

I like it and I agree with a few others who've suggested most recent comments appear first.

Great job, Manu. Thanks!

I'm confused. The comments, that I've seen anyway, are newest to oldest.

If you're looking at the comments at the end of the story, as a reader would, they're listed newest to oldest but if you're logged in as an author viewing your list of stories and click to see the comments for a story, they're listed oldest to newest.

I like the idea of newest to oldest in both places. Good job.

On another topic, are there going to be additional enhancements for Series?

For me, at least, the comments are still newest to oldest. So- still confused.

Click on "read all user comments"--this gives ME comments oldest at top down to newest. "Recent" comments and "Show more" give you new first; but when you've an older story, you sometimes will click that "read all" choice and that gives you oldest first.

Ok. I see what you mean now. And yeah, it's only like that when you click read all. On the recent view, they're newest to oldest. Definitely something to fix, imo.

QUOTE MANU :D This is just the first "baby step" rollout of the new comment system. The next version will have more bells and whistles.

Any idea yet when we should expect the “next version”?

QUOTE MANU I don't want to spoil the surprise just yet (and I'm still not sure what order things will be rolled out in), but there are big improvements coming to the entire comment system.

SPOIL IT!!!!
Surprise may be good at Christmas but almost all research on the subject now suggests that in cases like this it’s much, much better to get the people who’ll be affected by the changes involved as early as possible. Overly centralized power and decision making invariably lead to failures in anticipating the needs of the marketplace.

QUOTE MANU During all of the upgrades, we will closely monitor the number of comments & votes to make sure that the changes don't negatively affect either. If we see any dramatic decreases in votes or comments, we'll adjust course. But, in the long run, we are pretty confident authors should see a big increase in story comments once all of the planned features are rolled out.

Quite frankly, given the low average number of comments that stories received before, it’s hard to imagine that there could be decreases. Let’s all hope this new system promotes MAJOR increases. Given you’re doing all this work what is the ultimate goal you’ve set for the average number of comments per story? Remember, unstated goals are never achieved.

I’m also still curious as to the number of votes an average story now receives. Is it truly that great a secret?

Keep up the good work but why not try to be a little more communicative in the future on what you’re doing and planning. Your “Herculean” like shoulders are wide MANU :D but even you would profit by having other hands supporting the vast LITORICAN landscape.

Had my story posted under the new comment system. I like it very much. Easy to read and can comment from the Authors recent activity page. Hope you get rid of the little x boxes. Overall some nice changes.
Thank you

Re- the newest/oldest comment threading, I just noticed that if I go into the comments for one of my stories thru the recent activity links within my acct, I see the comments oldest to newest; if I use the manage public comments link within my submission page, they are still newest to oldest. I think that's part of where I got confused yesterday.

Overall, I agree that they should all be newest to oldest, but either way I'd love to see some consistency. The new comment system does look nice, tho.

Thank you for the feedback. Can you let me know what little red "X" boxes you are seeing? I mean, where are they exactly on the page and how many of them?

Also, for everyone else, thanks for the feedback as well. We are looking at the newest/oldest issue. The logic behind having it oldest to newest on the Feedback Board was so that it would make sense when we introduce threaded comments. For example, if we have a comment board that looks like this:

Original Comment 1
Original Comment 2
--Reply to Original Comment 2 a
--Reply to Original Comment 2 b
Original Comment 3
--Reply to Original Comment 3 a
Original Comment 4
Original Comment 5
Original Comment 6
Original Comment 7
--Reply To Original Comment 7 a
--Reply To Original Comment 7 b
--Reply To Original Comment 7 c
Original Comment 8
Original Comment 9
Original Comment 10

Then we have to find a way to make the sorting of the comments - and threaded replies to those original comments - make sense. Using oldest to newest is the most simple solution. If we just sorted newest to oldest, disregarding the thread, it would become confusing. Maybe we can look into some kind of hybrid system that show the thread with the most recent comments at the top of the feedback board, like on this very forum that we are posting on right now. I will think about it, but please do let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks again, everyone! :)

One more thing I forgot to mention.

When you go from your activity overview (Recent Activity), in your Lit author control panel, would you like to be able to click on a recent comment and be sent to that exact comment on the comment board for that story? I mean, instead of just being send to the comment board, having a link to each specific comment? Especially once we add threading, it seems like that might be a good idea. What do you think?

:)

When I go to a new comment from the recent activity part, I would prefer to go directly to that comment, as I have been doing. I would want to then be able to read all other comments without doing anything but scrolling down, from the newest to the oldest. In other words, that newest comment would be at the head of the list.

Anything that will result in more PC is a plus, and I also like the idea of encouraging discussion. We get some of that already, but I would want more. I would want to be able to respond directly to posted queries.

I prefer to have the vote posted there too, but it is not a big deal.

I have some definite opinions on the idea of series of stories, but I don't know if you are still interested in them.

When hitting moderate comments on the submission page it use to come up with the thermostate saying 00 to 100. No it comes up with a red x instead.

I would prefer to also see the newest comment first. Especially in older stories where there are dozens of comment. It would also be nice that when you click on recent activity that it goes to the comment clicked on.

Also I like the new format but some readers don't, I'll give an examples.

I also don't like this new voting or comment system. you can still read the comments but you have no idea if somebody liked the story or not. eventhough somebody might think I did not like it to much I gave you 75 for the start. hope you authors could influence literotica to change that.

Well, Manu, thanks for staying on top of things. Much appreciated.
With respect
DG

I think its a good change, and I think the threading will be really great but I do miss the little thermometer :( and the little symbol thats in its place, for the comments made under the new system is kinda depressing to see for some reason.
