New Category You Want To Write In?

Is there a category of story in which you have not, to date, published, but that you would like try? Why?

I have quite a few such categories, because there are many types of stories I haven't written but would like to try. But probably number 1 is illustrated, I want to see what it's like to write a story accompanied by illustrations. I'm curious to see if, with some effort, I can pull off the illustrations myself.

Honestly? I'd like to dabble in LW, but - as alluded in my new thread - I'm not willing to put up with the garbage it draws. The personal insults are uncalled for, even though they bounce off. The negativity and hatred are still stifling. Crazy world we live in these days.

No interest elsewhere because I don't especially care for writing for writing's sake, makes me feel a little like I'm back in school. I'm a little bit of a Walter Mitty in that I write to express my fantasies drawn from a small amount of real-world experience. That doesn't involve anything out of the GS and LW realms, where I can have some fun.

YMMV! ;)

I've published in nineteen categories so far. That'll probably do me for the time being.

Why don't you submit your art by itself?

There are categories I've tried to write in and found that they don't work for me. I worked on an Interracial story that turned into something else, because the tropes involved with making relationships between people of different backgrounds into a kink were vexing. I've tried writing Mind Control and same thing happened. It's turned into something that I can live with. Mind Control and Non-Consent are actually the same thing, except that as sexual fantasies they're apparently distinct.

Science Fiction, maybe. I'm blocking out a very old-fashioned science fiction book but I don't have any vivid ideas for the sex scenes yet. If I can come up with three scenarios that are really turn-ons I have something to work with. Same thing's going on with a pulp suspense novella about a combat veteran/vagabond porn actor that looks like it would take place in little old Greenleaf Township.

Because I haven't got around to making it as good as I'd like it. That's probably what I'll do, to start, and see how it goes. But ultimately I want to do an illustrated story and ideally I can do the illustrations myself. I'm not sure if I'm good enough.

So far, I've posted stories in:
Erotic Couplings
Erotic Horror
Exhibitionist & Voyeur
First Time
Humor & Satire
Incest / Taboo
Sci Fi & Fantasy

There are a couple of categories I'd have absolutely no clue how to write in: BDSM & Gay Male, Transgender & Crossdressers, for instance.

I could probably write a Lesbian Sex story I suppose but of course it would wind up being from a male fantasy perspective lol.

Interracial holds no interest for me. I prefer to see people as human beings and not fetishize their ethnicity or skin color.

I definitely have a Mind Control story in mind, and a Fetish.

Toys & Masturbation could be interesting I suppose.

Also: I've already written my 750 word challenge story and absolutely have no idea what category it should post in.

It COULD go in Loving Wives although I'm not entirely sure it truly meets that criteria either lol.

I suppose I could post it there and watch the hate reviews come in if I can't think of a better category.

Would you do hand drawings or CGI?

Most of my stories in their original threads are illustrated (largely photomanipulation by someone who is pretty good at them)...I can't draw a straight line and the software to do anything serious on the computer is quite expensive and takes a lot of time to learn.

But if you can do it, that would be fun...

I'm a sci-fi fan and I would like to write something for the sci-fi section here. I think it could be fun to write something kind of space adventure or something futuristic.

....

I have Adobe Illustrated and I recently bought a Waucom tablet. So far the results are pure crap, so it will be a while before I publish anything using that medium. I could probably do some hand illustrations with pencil that would be better, but at the moment they're not as good as I want them to be to publish them.

If, after enough time trying to figure it out myself, I'm not satisfied with my own art work, I'm going to try to enlist someone else to do it.

Sci-Fi is my go-to category, but I have strayed a couple of times. Two stories in EC, one each in I/T and Erotic Horror. I'll probably end up with at least one more in EH and Nonhuman, should I ever manage to write my "Vampire Steve" story and it's sequel, "The Horny Werewolf".

Things I'd like to try: Managing to muster the patience needed for an audio story. Although going by my usual output, I wonder if Laurel will accept a couple dozen megabytes in .mp3 files. :) Speech can be compressed a lot harder than music, but turning for example "Express Delivery"'s 104k words into audio will still result in a few whoppers.

I have two works in progress, one will be my first submission in Lesbian, the other contains strong BDSM elements. It is turning into a 60k+ monster and will probably go in Novels and Novellas, but it's made me think I might try my hand at a fully BDSM story.

I keep thinking I would like to try SciFi/Fantasy, but have absolutely no idea what that might look like.

There are few hard rules in SF/F - as long as you have a great story to tell, the readership will be there. I have posted everything from cyberpunk to space operas, grimdark sword'n'sorcery to D&D fanfic and got very kind comments. The sex scenes ranged from vanilla to gay, softcore to demonic non-con and there were few complaints. Heck, I even have the occasional red H on chapters with zero sex at all. If you have questions, feel free to ping me. I'll help however I can.

Also: The Geek Pride Day event might be a cool way to get your feet wet. If it's even remotely "geeky", there's a good chance it will get eyeballs.

I've got an erotic horror story started that I think will be good. I started it in 2020 for the Halloween contest, but it just grew too big to finish. And i didn't have any motivation this past October. But, I think I'll get it finished for this year.

My Valentine's Day event entry will be in Lesbian sex, which will be a first. No idea how it will go over. But nothing ventured ...

Across my accounts I've written to all categories except illustrated and audio. Have no plans to write to those two. For one of the contests years ago I wrote fifteen stories, each a different category.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer.

I don't usually start a writing project without a really strong concept, and with SF/F, I just don't have one, at least not yet.

The next new category for me will probably be E&V.

There are a number of categories where I have no interest and others where I have no expertise and little interest in research.

Of course, LW is like the limburger cheese of Lit. You pinch your nose, hold it at arms length, and wonder if you should or even could.

If I had the time to do it myself, or could find an artist to do it for me, I'd love to do Illustrated stories from the Alexaverse, Time Rider, or the Tale of Amberley Bloodstar. I would have SO much fun with that. I suppose I'm just not terribly clear on the rules for that category.

Aside from the obvious no-no's, are the illustrations of sex allowed to get graphic?

Yes. The rules for drawings are different to photo content, because they're not subject to the same laws.

These are my categories and counts to date:
  • Anal - 3
  • Erotic Couplings - 5
  • Erotic Horror - 2
  • Exhibitionist & Voyeur - 7
  • Fetish - 1
  • First Time - 2
  • Group Sex - 2
  • Mature - 1
  • NonHuman - 4
  • Sci-Fi & Fantasy - 12
Unlike plenty of others, I think it's obvious where my brain goes :D. Some of the NonHuman / Erotic Horror would likely be SF&F if these more niche categories didn't exist, my brain generally goes in this direction so it's actually work for me to stay away from SF&F elements. Most of my EC were in my early days before I worked out the Categories here.

I've had good reception and not so good all around, so it's not like the readership in one or the other love/hate me excessively.

As to what I haven't done, I have one E&V story that should've gone into Non-Erotic... I can't write adequately in anything but English, so that let's out Non-English :). I don't really care or have the knowledge about Celebrities or LW or Gay Male and T&C. I/T, maybe, but not that strong a desire. I have dabbled in real life in BDSM, and have incorporated some light elements in various stories, but not likely to focus on it.

New categories? I have a WIP that will fall into Lesbian or NonCon, either would be new for me (I have lesbian couples, but they've always been along for the ride in other stories.) I have something that might fit Novels & Novellas, and actually an existing story (in E&V but a stretch) would've likely done better there. But other than these and Humor & Satire, none of the categories I've not written in excite me.

I've got half an Erotic Horror draft.
Last year I posted stories in First Time, Romance, and Anal for the first time.

A work in progress might go to Lesbian Sex or Humor/Satire.

Another may go to E/V (not sure how women watching or consensual watching goes down there),but could also end up under EC, BDSM or another new category for me, Novels/Novellas.

I'm tempted to try an incest story to see if I can. Also to try a LW story under a new username, as a bigot-o-thon - a pound to charity for every abusive or incel comment...

As someone interested in the explorative aspects of writing, a secondary goal of mine is to hit all the categories (I won't.) Extending boundaries by finding people and scenarios outside my normal (huh?) palette. Attempting to channel unfamiliar characters is a mighty challenge, and the effort can result in some spectacular disasters, story-wise, which I accept as part of the price of experimentation. But I have almost always learned something, either about the skill aspects of writing or my (lack of) imaginative scope.

There are 32 categories here, so 7 to go.

I joined awhile ago but just missed the 'survivor' challenge era, which sounded like trying to hit all the croquet hoops in a limited amount of time (with an absolutely bizarre scoring system and set of mulligan rules.)

The various contests and challenges around do make for a good excuse to try something different.
