The following link is to a site that has a "body weight" calculator based on the new standards adopted by the government in 1998.

Should be helpful in calculating the cost of your air fare in the future.

It's interesting to note that according to the new standards, Michael Jordan and Carl Ripken, Jr. are both over weight. Huh?

Boobs and brains? Well...let's judge...I bags seeing the boobs first ;)

Me and Russel Crowe are in the same boat, apparently.

Only I'm less abusive toward women.

It hardly seems fair.

The government approves of me, but I don't approve of them.

I don't think height & weight alone mean much, without a percent body fat, or an elbow width to gauge frame size. I'm below my healthy weight now.

I'm over wieght???? how can this be???? Will I have to buy two tickets next time I want to fly??

BMI indexs have always been horribly inaccurate because they don't take into account heavily muscular people or people with very large frames.

Every BMI chart I have ever seen has had that disclamier on it except for this one. Hmhh I wonder why??

Because this is the "Official Governemnt" BMI chart. The one brought to us in 1998. Because the govm't said so, they don't need no stinking disclaimers.

It is the official chart that Southwest Airlines will use to calculate air fares with after the law suits settle.

I was one of those that went from just right to 'overweight' without gaining an ounce.

That was a rhetorical question. BMI charts only work for people who are normal frame size and not heavily muscular. Everyone has known this forever but the military still uses a BMI chart too. I am pretty sure the last time I saw the military BMI chart it had that disclaimer but I am not positive.

Az, I'm not arguing with you. I'm just telling you that this IS the new goverment chart and there is no disclaimer.

And because it is the "official' chart, it is the one that Southwest Airlines will use to set air fares. I mean with 60% of the citizenry registering as 'obese' and SWA able to charge double, how can they go wrong?

does it bother anyone else

that having passengers step on a scale before they set fares is an invasion of privacy?

btw my current BMI is 28.
My highest BMI was 38

No, it really isn't. The airlines are private conveiences. Having to weigh you can be made part of the contract. Don't want to be weighed? Don't fly. It's roughly the same as having to take a drug test as a condition of employment, or a medical exam as a condition of being insured.

Ishmael

According to this site I'm too thin, does this mean I get half off the regular fare?

Personally I think it is disgusting that the airlines (SW) are charging more for fluffy people. Why not just make their seats a little bit bigger and more comfortable all around?? Anything to make a buck.

Disgusted.

How can they go wrong???? you ask. They'll lose buisness for sure. For the past two months there rates (all airlines thats is) have sky rocketed way out of proportion. I belonge to the group that feeds these airlines the most. I travel for buisness reasons...... guess I'll be driving up to New Jersey from now on? Lets see how much money they make off me then?
Thats never made any sense to me? These airlines, as well as some other buisness, will double there rates and then wonder why there profits go down?

I hear you, but America is habituated on doing business "right now" and "face to face". Like I said before, it's going to get interesting.

BMI's are incredibly stupid but they are easy.

At 5 foot 11 and 215 I am obesse. haha. Funny.

My gf is too skinny at 5 foot 6 and 113. She actually had one of those tests done where they measure your frame size by measuring the size of your joints. According to that and some other tests she is towards the low side of her ideal weight.

Edit to add that my exgf who is incredibly neurotic about her weight and many other things is just right at 5 foot 5 and 135.

She is always saying how she feels fat maybe I should send her here.

Actually, that chart doesn't account for gender either.

I honestly can't remember if gender matters for BMI's. I don't think it does.

I think it does, because a man's body is generally more solid than a woman's.

I wonder where my CAP stuff is. The old military BMI chart is in there somewhere.

This would be from like 1995 or so.

Gender certainly should be a consideration. Women have an extra layer of body fat that men don't. So the body density is quite different.
