New author looking for tips

Hello,

I'm a fairly new member here at Literotica, although I have been reading the many varied stories here for quite some time.

I have written quite a lot of stories in the past and most are posted to another site (a BDSM site) and I decided to write some new ones and post them here. The readership seems a lot larger, for one thing.

I was wondering, do any of you have any good hints or tips for a fledgling author at this site?

Please, bear in mind, I don't mean what's contained in the FAQs (I've read them, extensively) and I don't mean about the actual technicalities of writing (I think I write a fair story), I mean the kind of stuff you don't find out until you've "been around the block" a bit. Not that I'm not willing to pay my dues and learn the hard way, of course. I merely thought I'd ask and attempt to avoid any possible pitfalls, or faux pas.

I write hardcore BDSM, for the most part, from the Dominant female perspective.

Thank you, in advance,

Katrina

Hello and welcome to the AH :)

Just one thing to say really...

Don't be afraid to ask any questions..however silly they may seem...they're a good bunch here and someone will know the ansewer. And we won't laugh at you...well not much ;)

I am sure others will have more advice for ya ;)

Thank you for the lovely welcome, English Lady. As you can probably tell, I'm not afraid of asking questions. Being laughed at, however...

Haha!

Welcome to the site.

When you say you've read the FAQs, does that include the Writer's Resources section? If not, then I thoroughly recommend it. There are some superb essays by experienced Lit writers on there; I'd recommend anything by Whispersecret or KillerMuffin (the two by TheEarl aren't bad either).

Try popping your head into the Story Discussion Circle forum as well. It's the best place to learn anything and everything and no matter how good your technique, I guarantee you'll learn things from having Rumpleforeskin go through your work, or by going through someone else's.

Hope you have fun.

Your welcome :)

Ahh well there are some characters here...don't worry they're all friendly. Some do bite but hey, you get used to it eventually;)

I'm pretty new here myself, Katrina. I've found the most useful things to do are exactly what you're doing in this thread ... ask questions and get to know a few folk.

I was on a number of different boards here at the start and found AH to be the most friendly for the sort of inane/infomative/provocative discussion I like to be a part of, so I'm here until I'm kicked out I guess.

I have yet to ask a question in Ah which has not been given attention, sometimes quite a bit more than it deserved.

For example, I've just gotten interested in BDSM and have found no end of helpful tips and recommendations.

If you like to get involved in editing stories, or in having your stories edited, you are probably already aware of the SDC (Story Discussion Circle) and the editor's board. I've had a lot of luck and great editorial help in writing to individuals for their assistance.

And before you post, do a search on "trolls" and read some threads so your prepared for what will happen, especially if you write "a pretty fair story."

Good luck, and welcome!

Thank you, The Earl.

Tell me, when you say "Writer's Resources section" do you mean the "How To" essays and so on that come under the stories section of this site? Or, is there a whole different section under that name? I don't recall coming across that, on my perusals. I have read several of the "How To's", however, and your name even rings a bell.

I haven't looked at the Story Discussion Circle yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you, Softouch! That was incredibly informative.

Trolls, huh? The only trolls I've ever come across are those which seem to get a perverse kick from flaming others and being general assholes on message boards and the like. They go another level here and "troll" stories? That would be in the public comments, right?

Anyway, I'll do as you suggest and search the threads.

Vella, thank you.

But, I'm sorry... huh? Never mind, I'm sure I'll understand what you were talking about there sometime soon.

It's about 10 down from the top on the main stories page. Hope mine helped if you did read it.

I'm still learning myself ... but wanted to say "welcome."

Oh, and if you want a big following, best to stick to one category 'til you have it -- THEN branch out. If you start out posting in multiple categories, 18 months later you'll still have just a small cadre of loyal readers.

Nah, you should tell her in advance we'll pretty much laugh at her constantly. It's our way of saying "welcome to the Ah, now beg for mercy, Bitch!"

:D

You do all seem very friendly so far. Thank you, Samandiriel.
They are, I'm not...and please, call me Sam...it's too long to spell the other way.

Thanks for the link, much appreciated!

To be honest, I don't recall if I did actually read one of yours. I remember the name, but I've read so much here, by so many, that recalling individual stories and essays can be a bit tricky. Must be the age. Haha!

Welcome to Lit and to the AH!

Trolls vote 1s on stories to bring them down out of spite, and leave nasty PCs, particularly for stories in the Lovng Wives category. Laurel and Manu (who own and operate the site) regularly sweep scores and clear out the 1s as often as they can, but the trolls do their damage.

I've written a couple of BDSM stories and have not run into trolls that I'm aware of, nor have I received any nasty PCs or feedback...yet. ;)

Enjoy!

Edited to add: post a link to your stories in your sigline!

Impressive, I'm almost loathed to say this, but you sound bitter. I hope that was sarcasm on your part. Is it really that tough here?

Thanks for the tip. I do appreciate it.

oops Kat.. I forgot to say howdy.. and welcome... just to let ya know... the only reason an old hairy kneed feller would ponder the possibility of wearing a rediculous greeter outfit.. is to try and wrangle kisses from all newbies.....

Only real tip i can think of is try entering one of the contest as soon as you can. They give you the greatest exposure and that is important to a new author wanting to reach as many readers as you can.

Welcome to the Ah
