Yeah, Mies liked to "express" structure, and show the beams and columns. Building codes required the columns to be fireproofed (encased in concrete in this case), so he just glued some decorative ones on the outside. I'm being slightly flippant; it really is an elegant detail.

This is inspired (if that's not too lofty a word) by a design for artisans' cottage by Le Corbusier. It's been a recurring theme for me over the years.
