Hi! I'm fairly new to writing on Lit - I have five chapters of a story published and I'm working on more. The more I've written, the more I'm realizing I want to continue writing in the long run. I didn't put much thought into it when I changed my username and so now I'm really wanting to change it.

I heard that to change a username, pm'ing Laurel is the only way. I got no response, so I'm not too hopeful that it can happen (maybe because I don't technically have many forum posts/stories published). I'm thinking that maybe I should just make a new account and then republish what I have already there, but I'm sad about losing those initial comments as well as the small following I've gained on this account.

What would you recommend I do? What would you do? Would it be bad to reach out to Lauren again? If I make a new account, do I have to delete the stories off my other one? If I republish stories, then would that be seen negatively by people who have read it before? Are there any more creative ideas that can help me feel like I'm not starting all over again?

I'd love to hear any thoughts or suggestions, thank you :)

One thought is that Laurel should be answering her mail. This comes up too often and it comes up often enough that it seems really to be something that doesn't happen here a lot. Sorry your reasonable question was ignored.

I've never heard that you can change a user name.

If you want to keep your existing stories under a new name, then you might need to take down everything you've published, maybe void the current account, open a new one, and re-up you're stories.

I'd want to have a few words with Laurel before I did that.

If you don't need to move your stories to the new account, then just open a new account and keep writing. That's the simple solution.

I've seen a few people asking about changing an account name over the years, but I don't recall anybody who managed to do it. I think your best option may be what Heartsongs suggested, setting up a new account with the desired name (and then linking between the accounts in their respective bios).

One thing that apparently is possible (or has been in the past) is to transfer published stories from one account to another. I haven't tried it myself, but angstypleasure is an example of where it's been done after the author got locked out of his old account. The second account was created in 2009 but several of its stories and at least one of the comments go back to 2007/2008, so it looks like they really were transferred complete with existing comments and presumably votes, not just reposted.

So I'd set up the new account, post new stuff there, and PM Laurel to ask whether she can transfer the old stories across.

I've read that some members have multiple accounts. It might be easier to just continue your new stories with your new name ,and just leave your current story with your current name.

Good luck with whatever you choose.😊

Yes, I didn't know this until recently! I guess I just want to have all of my work in one place at some point in the future. I don't plan on writing vastly different types of stories for different audiences so having multiple accounts holds little value to me. Thank you for your response, though, this might be what I have to do as a work around

Right, it's difficult because Laurel is one person doing so much - I feel like I'm always seeing as a response to forum questions to just pm Laurel. If there were a way for me to get my question answered without having to go to the very top it would definitely be nice :')

Maybe I will just follow up. Though I don't want to come across as annoying...

I did some digging through forums and have seen some individuals request it. I believe one did get it done (others talked about it as if they'd been successful with changing their user too). Perhaps then I would want to check in with her one more time since closing out the account and losing all the meta data associated with my submissions is the exact opposite of what I'd like!

Thank you for your insight though, it's very helpful.

Thank you! It's very helpful to know what people have done in the past (though I think from my forum searches I've seen a couple individuals who reported that Laurel helped them with changing their username). I appreciate your insight - perhaps setting up the second account isn't a bad idea at all.

Either way, linking the accounts in the bios isn't the worst idea either and may just be my last resort.

I'd change my username if I could at this point but have never seen anything indicating that it's a real option.
