Figure your net worth

1. List all of your fixed assets, such as real estate and cars, at their current value.

2. List all of your liquid assets: cash, certificates of deposit, stocks, bonds and
bank accounts.

3. List all jewelry, furniture and household items at their current value.

4. Add all of the above. These are your total assets.

5. Subtract all of your debts, such as your mortgage, car loan and credit card
balances, from your total assets. The result is your net worth.

6. Reassess your net worth every year.

Well, this wasn't much fun. It didn't have me list all the things I have that I value. Such as better health, a slower paced life, the long walks I now have time for, the smile of a child when I listen to their knock knock jokes, for the millionth time...
how about the first ice cream cone of the season? Or the first robin? Or the tiny pale green shoots that signal spring is on it's way?
How about having the winter clothes dry cleaned and packed away?
Where do I list those things?

You really struck a chord for me....

My net worth, sperate from my wife's is greater than I could have ever imagined when I was a young law student arranging bail for prisoners brought into jail during the riots in Detroit in 1967. Although I always sought material wealth and have been fortunate enough to achieve it, I did not truly understand the concept of emotional well-being until recently.

Those intangibles, like self-esteem, honor, kindness, humilty, love, stability, friendship, health and inner peace are now of greater value to me than my material "wealth". Of course, it seems that it's easy for me to say that because I have a few bucks, but, in reality, I am not impressed with things as I am with the depth of one's soul.

One of my major flaws is that I am not real good at small talk. I believe that sports were invented so that men would not have to talk about their inner felings. That is one of Man's greatest failings and likely the reason why so many men are incapable of "speaking" to women and nurturing their children.

So, Merelan , you are on the right track. Smell the roses while you can. If you haven't noticed, they don't have luggage racks on hearses.

And where do you list what your friends are worth for you? The times they reach out and support you and are there for you when you need it?

And the times when they are there to share the joy when something good happens in life?

I for one think that my life wouldn't be quite as much worth if I didn't have them. After all money can't buy you happiness and freindships.
