I need to put some sort of filtering sofware, or special browser on my kids PC, and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation.

I want them to be able to surf if they want to look something up, they already know about Google for example, and I can filter Google pretty well on it's own. I just want to be sure they can't type something into the address bar and accidentally run into something inappropriate .

So, what are you all using?

I have a friend that uses Net Nanny. Seems to work well enough for smaller kids. Teens figure out how to get around it.

Thanks for answering.

I'm looking for something for little kids, so that's not a problem. I can't find any reviews that are very thorough, so I figured I'd ask for some first hand knowledge :)

I use the no one touches my computer or gets thier fingers broken approach to censoring the internet :D

LMM, your philosophy is similar to mine. When my niece visits me, she knows to ask permission before she touches my computer. She knows the sites she is allowed to visit, we put her sites at the top of my favorites list. Everything else is off limits.

Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Content and set-up the RASCi standards on his machine. It's as effective as any of the add-on content controls because children will be able to get around almost anything you use if they want to. It won't work on all offensive content, because it relies on sites to rate their content and not all bad sites are responsible enough to do that -- you can set it to block any site that doesn't respond with a RASCi rating.

IE has other parental control abilities as well and for young children it's adequate. Having the children's computer in the living room or other public place works better than any net-nanny program -- most kids are innately smart enough torelize that surfing forbidden sites where Mom and/or Dad can just glance over and seee what they're up to isn't a good idea. ;)
