First Mass Effect is definitely worth it. Great game, great plot, gorgeous scenery, awesome music, and a great mix of drama and comedy. The gameplay is a bit rough around the edges (it's interesting to play Bioware games from the older ones up through the newer ones to see how things evolve...), but the game is overall worth it.

ME2 and ME3, much more streamlined gameplay-wise, and each game lets you import a save file from the previous game. For ME2, you can get a DLC that basically lets you skim through the first game in the form of a choose-your-own-adventure comic book and make all the important decisions from ME1 before playing ME2. By the time you get to ME3, you get to see the impacts of a lot of decisions cascading from the first and second game to have huge payoffs in the third.

That said, the finale of ME3, while great (in my opinion), wasn't all that tied in with the rest of the previous plot. You can see how everything comes together, but it really feels like the finale was written separately from all the previous stuff, as it wasn't very connected directly.

As far as written sci-fi goes, what sort of sci-fi do you prefer?
