:)

I prefer Picard, as I have actually watched Next Generation, never actually watched the original series.

Fair enough, either answer is correct, and we'd probably have accepted any appropriately nerdy third option like "Solo". :D

Picard's my favorite too, though Kirk is awesome in his own ways.

Ah I see :)

Anyone up to anything fun this morning? I'm watching my puppy chew on her dragon while I make breakfast :)

I'm noodling around on the internet doing some research for a personal project I'm working on. Basically, I want to get a set of poker chips printed celebrating my promotion to Staff Sergeant. I'm gonna give them to friends and family as a sort of keepsake thingy. I was going to do a set of Challenge Coins, but those cost too much ($300 and up for a minimum order of 100. Poker chips are much cheaper.)

Other than that, playing Fallout New Vegas and playing with my new-to-me 2nd Gen iPod Touch.

Oh, and my tool of a room mate seriously tried to coin check me tonight. I guess he figured that just because I was in a t-shirt and a pair of comfy shorts that he'd catch me without a coin outside of my room. :D

what is coin checking?

what is coin checking?

I'm glad you asked!

Basically, in Air Force, we have these things called Challenge Coins. They're a tradition going back to the First World War, where an American pilot was show down and captured by the Germans. They took his identification away from him when they captured him, and when he escaped, the only thing he had to identify himself to Allied troops was a bronze coin that a wealthy member of their squadron had minted for the pilots to have as keepsakes, minted with the squadron's name and logo.

Essentially, they're little medallions with designs printed or engraved on them. Generally, most, if not every squadron, in the Air Force has its own coin that is given to members, and others are minted for special events or deployments or what not. Walk into the office of a man who has been in the military, and it won't be unusual to see a big display rack covered in coins from different places.

Anyhow, because of the events in the story I told you, all airmen are expected and required to have their coin on them at all times, and failing to do so is punished with SEVERE punishment. Well, the guy has to buy drinks for everyone who does have their coin. If you suspect that someone doesn't have their coin on them, you "Coin Check" them by pulling out your coin and either dropping it or audibly putting it down on a table. In a crowded bar, you can do this by loudly slamming the coin down. Of course, if everybody present has their coin, the guy doing the coin check has to buy drinks for everybody.

Oh, and there are no accidental coin checks. If your coin falls out of your pocket while you grab your car keys, you just coin checked everybody within range. :D

Low tech sonar coin ping, lol. Love it.

My mother's was in the Army so I knew of the convention, but couldn't recall the exact rules of engagement as it were :)

*sigh*

In case any of you haven't heard yet: Leslie Nielsen is dead at the age of 84.

And yes, I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.

I saw that on FB this morning at 3 am :(

Enjoyed him in many films, brought lots of laughs to the world.

In this, the Nerd thread, I will remind everyone that dear Leslie was also one of the main stars of themovie Forbidden Planet.

If you haven't seen it find it. Nerd cards can and might be revoked for failure to have this movie under your belt.

Wee, have a story in the queue to be submitted. Actually a Christmas story from several years ago that got shot down for being about 100 words too short (grr, it was DONE at 650ish, there wasn't any more story to TELL).

So I threw in a Christmasy "Note from the Author" at the end to fluff it out. It's still seasonal, all the thoughts I expressed were very much heartfelt and such. I just wouldn't have put it in there if it weren't for the freaking 750 word hard minimum.

Oh Writer's Block, you are a ruthless bitch. I have a brilliant story, if only I could write the stupid thing.

And the first of my two holiday contributions has been approved! (See the signature) :-D

So, what has everybody been up to lately? I went into town yesterday and got fitted for a new leather jacket. It will cost me $160, tailored, black leather, mink lining, and two inside pockets. I should be able to stay warm this winter. :D

Not bad. Been pretty busy at work lately. Lots of boring crap that someone has to do, so I get to do it.

I know how that is.. I'm the responsible one at work, so I get all the extra crap to do while my coworkers stand around and shoot the shit.... and I make less than a lot of 'em

Not so much a surrounded by lazy people thing, my job is just less intensive than most others, so I get lots of other "Opportunities to Excel" cause other folks are too busy.
