I believe it is always unwise, however unlikely, to tempt fate.

I never, ever, name any electronic device with a hard drive or a processor after an AI. Especially one that inevitably goes insane and kills its master. Glados, Shodan, EXAM, Skynet, HAL, Wopr, or Landru...

Just seems to invite disaster. Granted, a vacuum poses little threat, but why risk it?

ahahaha, very true

i remember seeing an old twilight zone...or was it doctor who...think it was TZ...I was about 5 and it had do to with people being eaten by something that resembled a garbage can. I was terrified of Garbage cans.

so i should be worried that I named my car Gidget and my Mac "Haliburton"

oh im in trouble

aand my Mac "Haliburton"

Whoa...

I may be an evil monster, but that... Wow. Way out of my league.

Anyway, welcome to the nerd thread.
Hang around, pay homage to our Empress, and post as often as your digital overlords permit.

*salutes*

will do!

In fine nerd tradition, I had to play trivia (Buzztime) while I was playing poker tonight in the bar. ;) It wasn't as easy to do both at once as I thought. It didn't matter; I was getting my ass handed to me in the poker game. :(

See, now you're just rubbing it in.

Neg. Not really.
... Maybe a little.

I'm just frustrated that I don't have anyone to practice on anymore.
*Sigh* They'll revoke my Companion license if I don't get recertified, and I am getting rusty.

Pen, that's awfully ambitious... If the poker went badly, how'd you fare at the trivia?

I'm a much better trivia player than a poker player. I did alright at trivia; problem is, music and movies are a huge weakness for me. I would have done better if I hadn't been playing poker. :p

A close friend and I are old quizbowl nerds, so we look for any suitable venue to flout our voluminous useless knowledge. We play trivia night at my favorite restaurant every week, and we come up with some weird shit. One night, we had somebody we wanted to impress with us, and I pulled all of the highest peaks on all seven continents. Epic win! :D

Maybe that's been my problem. I sometimes joke that the computers at work will pull a HAL 9000 on us and take over. And we have been having quite a few malfunctions lately....... maybe I just need to keep my big mouth shut.

I guess it's a good thing we named our home computer after SAL 9000; she didn't go nuts!

Of all the insane AIs fiction has given us, HAL hasn't really so bad. He just had some conflicting orders, according to Dr Chandra, and followed his mission parameters to the best of his abilities.

... Still wouldn't hop into any cryo tubes if I were you though...

Or go out in one of the space pods to repair the AE 35 antenna. I get the feeling that could be hazardous to my health. Besides, I don't like the idea of floating around the solar system for a thousand years only to be revived into a world I don't know.

Sorry I've been gone for so long. I'm not even going to make an excuse, just an apology. Hopefully I can stop in every once in a while and say hello. Until then, I hereby hit the reset button.

It's cool. You're always welcome here, nemesis mine.
Hope everything's going ok for you.

Draconus, yeah, ending up in 3001 would be a bit of a culture shock.
Wouldn't mind being a Starchild though. Or igniting a gas giant into a star...

Squirts: Oddly enough, Catholic was gonna be my guess too.

And I named a vacuum cleaner "M-O" when I was in tech school, in reference to the OCD disinfecting robot from WALL-E.

So, I am now moved into my new apartment, just don't have any furniture!

But I do have internet! (I've got my priorities!) :-D

And I've found a couple of new webcomics to read! First is Air Force Blues and the other is Crew Dogs, both of them Air Force comics.

Here's a Crew Dogs one that I think y'all would appreciate:

I don't know if I'd want to be a Starchild. I mean, being at the beckon call of whoever made the Monoliths doesn't sound like all it's cracked up to be. The power would be nice, but the lack of freedom, not so much.

I will say that those Braincaps in 3001 sounded interesting, although I'm not so sure about having nano circuitry being implanted in my gray matter.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke's passing was a real loss.......

Except me. I'm way too stubborn to be leaded by the Empy. I'd rather snuggle in her chest and sit on her lap. <--------- ( and that is called initiative. I have that ability sometimes. Maybe it's the weird coffee/ espresso contraption I came across today at this little, run-down cafe next door to my work.)

You too serve our Empress. What good is a villain without a cat on her lap?
Or on a cleric's skull. Either's good.

GODDAMN THAT EVASIVE BLUE DOG! WHERE ARE MY ULTRA BALLS?

Draconus, I'd happily serve a master in exchange for that level of perception. I don't care so much about being able to manipulate matter as an ascended being, but I would give anything to be able to travel around and perceive the universe as only Bowman (or HALman) could.

Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, Wells... That golden age has come, graced our lives, and ended.

HEY! You leave Suicune alone now:D! He's a sweetie.

And you can add from those that immediately followed Zelazny, bless his misogynistic heart

I chased him all over Johto! He was paralyzed, with such a minute sliver of HP left that it could be said that he had none at all! STILL confounded my best attempts to catch him. What's a word for nostalgia, but with hatred?

And yes, Zelazny can come hang with the other greats. 13 Hugo nominations will definitely get you in the club.
