I got a really negative feedback on my last story. While normally that doesn't bother me, in fact helps me, this one was really ugly:mad: But what made me the maddest, is the man/ woman didn't even have the balls to leave thier name! If your going to leave nasty little messages, you should at least have the nerve to put your name to it. You did not have a problem leaving my name, you know Jethro, Retard Etc. While i understand everyone's a critic and they have a right to thier opinions, they also have the right not to read something that so deeply offends them! Thanks for letting me vent  CHEWEY

Gee, Chewey, you could have at least left me a link to the story. The most offensive thing I've been able to find to read lately is my W2 form.

I'm not sure which one he read, but I just finished Castle of Desire, and Daydreams. I liked them.

You might want to take a look at KillerMuffins essay on negative feedback. I think it's in the Author Resources section.

Every once in a while I get those but mostly I try to remember that they are probably teenagers who have no idea what they are saying. Unless they say I am sick in and twisted then I wish they would leave their email so I could say thank you...

Chewy,

As Aunt Minnie always said, "Just consider the source." That's especially true when the source is too gutless to even give their name.

I went over A Girl's Weekend because it was at the top of the list. Except for an ending that seemed a tad week, I thought it was a good story.

There were a few technical issues. The one that jumped out the most was your not placing new quotations in new paragraphs.

Standard practice is begin a new paragraph whenever a new character speaks. For instance:

--

The two old frieds glared at one another.

"You're ugly," said Tom.

"Stop talking to yourself," said Jerry.

The stare down was interrupted by the sound....

--

Hope some of that helped. RF

I was involved in the same contest with voyergirl and have just received my first piece of negative feedback.

I'm afraid that because I didn't preface my story with Editor's Notes referencing that the story was written for a contest which had a strict 800 word limit; readers may have assumed that the story was indicative of my general writing style.

Voyergirl....thanks for your feedback. It was much appreciated.

What can you do with people who provide only meanspirited attacks with no form of constructive criticism? Ignore them.

They have given you nothing worthwhile and are no more than a waste of your time.

Chin up CHEWEY. :)

Hmph.

You know, Chewy... some people are just so stupid. Look at all of the so-called "movie critics" running around, criticizing movies that are, IMO, AWESOME. Screw those idiots who left you such a bad response... they probably just wanted to see if they could get a rise out of you. I have thought about sending a certain story to the list, but... most people would probably just chew it up and spit it out anyway. No one appreciates work like other writers and storytellers.... like the other girls and guys said, it was probably some teenage punk who knows nothing about love, sex, or anything of the nature! Forget them, babes.

I am a new writer here and I was nervous about taking a chance to submit any stories. Recently, negative feedback was sent to me and I was frustrated because the sender was anonymous. I wanted to reply back to them to thank them for pointing out some things I had neglected to notice. I got the feeling the person only wanted to hurt my feelings and not offer true constructive criticism. A second person gave me the same feedback but in a very constructive manner. I was glad to be able to respond to them and let them know I appreciated the constructive criticism. Hopefully with more people like that, I will have an opportunity to grow and improve my writing skills.

Negative Feedback (and stuff)

Hey Chewey,
Guess we all receive, at least, some negative feedback. And if our experience is at all typical, all, or most of it, is posted anonymously. I have only received a couple such messages and, problem is, the poster had a good point and I wanted to thank him/her for the point made. My computer has a button to click that allows me to get on with other things!
Anonymous feedback really bugs me, though. I try to acknowledge all feedback and thank the writer for taking the time to write and cannot do that if I don't know where to send the message.

why we write?

hey guys it is great to get constructive feedback, but you have to think of why you write. we write because it makes us happy. if it happens to make others happy aswell your doing a good job!!!

don't let one nasty person ruin your ability to grow as a writer.

you'll also notice you will get like 7000 reads and only like 200 votes! that sucks
and i would think those nasty people who send feedback are some of the 1 votes, pulling your average down lower:( anyway look at how many people read your work and you only have 2 or 3 negative people. i don't know about you, but 2 nasty remarks out of a few thousand (hard or wet) readers is a pretty good!!

first write for you,
a writer "feels" the words as they flow forth....in erotica, the reader "feels" the words as they flow forth LMFAO!!!
you can guess what is "flowing" then you know you wrote a hot one!

Bad feedback sucks, anyone who posts a story gets it at some point. I guess no one minds if its constructive, but the idiots who just bad mouth us are the ones we hate.
I guess all I can say is ignore them and rejoice when you get positive feedback. I know I do, and if it's not anonymous I thank them.

So say :p to the jerks and  at the great readers.

Love and best

I just finished posting a reply in another site on this same subject. I said it there and I will say it here. I love feedback good and bad. I would just like for the person giving it to sign it, so that I might respond. When they do an atta boy they usually sign. When they tell you that you write like a tenth grade drop out, they dont. Best of all is the one who told me on another site that I need to buy a style book and read it until I learned something. The problem is, he didnt leave me his name so I could tell him thank you... When i commented exactly the same as I did here, I got a really sweet condescending reply from a college student. All about how being a writer does not make us better than the reader. Why should they sign their names just because we do.. roflmffao...We put ourselves up as targets for them to take pot shots at. I am sorry folks but that makes us fucking special.

Voy!

Voy girl.... you are just cracking me up. The whole writer/reader thing... yeah, you're right! LOL!!! :p

Negative feedback

Hey Chewey,

You shouldn't let one or two negative remarks upset you.
You can be sure that such comments come from people who haven't submitted anything of their own. I reality you can be sure there is always a group of people who make their living out of pulling down someone elses creation or work.

The important thing is to be happy with the piece yourself. The world is full of uncreative people, it is comforting to know that there are a few people who are left to inspire the rest.

Critisicm is the easy, creativity and imagination is a gift these critics envy after. Even the best artists have talentless critics, be happy in what you do and you have achieved your goal.

I had a nice piece of literary criticism from some anonymous person yesterday. It went as follows:

I WOULD HAVE KICK THE SLUT OUT ARE HAVE KILL HER ONE

One day I hope to decipher it and discover its no doubt enthralling meaning.

Eh.

So, yeah. I just got my first negetive feedback mail. I chose the option to not accept anonymous feedback. The people who do that are spineless, dickless bastards. A real person wouldn't pick out TWO mistakes you made and call you a bitch... SO, I am not accepting anymore anonymous feedback.... period.

hello Chewey

I have seen your stories, zoomed through most, and I see no reason for negativity.

As for negative feedback, heck my very first feedback was an anonymous response telling me to give up writing eh.

Fortunately I did the same thing I do with any email I am not interested in, just hit delete button. It only cost me 3 seconds, so I wasnt overly concerned.

It might concern me if it was sent by a named individual (well only if it was sent in a polite fashion too I guess). But I gave my put down the same response I would give to any person telling me "I suck" on the street, I just ignored it.

Take for instance yesterday at the mall. An old lady grumbled about me having the ungentlemenly nerve to step in front of her in a busy walkway. I said nothing, did nothing, and noticed she was after all alone (and likely for the obvious reason who would want to be with a bitter person).

I did enjoy the positive remarks I have gotten from friends of course (although it is wise to tone down those a notch heheh as they are usually unrealistically friendly).

This by the way people, is my first ever post on the board here.

Anonymous feedback: the other side

I can see how negative, destructive feedback can discourage an author from accepting anonymous feedback (AF). But AF cuts another way as well. I keep my e-mail address private at this site. I get plenty of spam as it is, & revealing my addy here would just invite more. It could even invite cyberstalkers, as even non-members can read the stories, poems & forums. Plus, even in AF, the reader has the option of giving an e-mail address so the writer can respond.

The number of votes versus the number of views of stories is also a good point. My most popular story has received 141 votes over more than 30,000 views. For the one ranking 2nd, it's 62/10K+. In both cases, the result is a mere fraction of a percent. Some of the views probably come from repeat readers; just because a story's been read 30K times doesn't mean it's been read by 30K people. Some who don't like the story will vote &/or send feedback, some won't. Some who DO like it will vote &/or send feedback, some won't.

Don't try to please everyone, 'cause you can't. Just please yourself & keep on writin'!

Reply

I want to thank all who gave me responses on my whine. :p It did bother me and I swore I would never write again publicly. I am like most of you, alot the times, tasteful help will help me to see what i am doing wrong. The negative makes me think i am doing everything wrong :( But I write for myself and More, who is also my editor, when i don't get excited and submit before he see's it :) I have written two more stories, Passionate Survival and Romance On Overtime! Read them, let me know what you think but I am like Maddy, i am turning off the anonyamous feedback. I know that's probably spelled wrong but you know what, I couldn't care less  Thanks again! Here's one funny one. When I read it this morning, I laughed out loud and decided to share it with you.

This message contains feedback for: Couture
About the submission: Jessie's Girl
This feedback was sent by: Anonymous

Comments:

Pursuant to the Berne Convention? Don't blame the Swiss for your pathetic
attempt at writing...Sheeeesh!
:p

Well thought out constructive feedback?

That display of inteligence is most likely the reason the feedback was posted anonymously!

you know it would be cool to reply back to these people that make stupid comments. what with the small sample of their talented writing ability they give us no choice, we have to assume that someone who can find nothing good to say about you putting your head on a chopping block must be a complete gutless arsehole!!!!!!

as a writer we all know the risks of nasty remarks and we do know we can't please everyone, but it takes a lot to set yourself up for public comments from uneducated critics that think because they jerk off they can judge us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have gotten very little as far as negative feedback but i do know others who have gotten some really really nasty comments. i hate to see an auther quit because of a hand full of jerks. in general i think this site attracts a great group of people, but there are always going to be exceptions to the rule. some of these readers just don't understand that with every story written we grow as a writer, and we get better and better. pitty for us they'll never read another after the disliked the first one they read. oh well their loss lol.

boy this is long, i have to shut up lmao!!!!!!

by guys! don't ever quit:kiss:

You can turn off anonymous feedback?

Well, I'm not. Because, even though I get some nasty ones, I get some good ones as well. In a way, it is kind of fun deleting the bad feedback. I wish there was some sort of button I could press and an animated hammer or blowtorch would pulverize the nasty feedback.
