I've been submitting my stories as .doc files. There's a couple of minor problems with this.

First, I'm pretty sure this slows down acceptance as someone has to format it.

I can't review what the story will look like when posted.

And sometimes formatting I had in the original file doesn't come through when the story is posted.

So, I'm going to try submitting into the box with the formatting codes embedded.

Could someone please help me out with a list of the appropriate codes to use?

Thanks in advance.

I think the ones they use are the same as on the boards. [/I ] for italics, [/B ] for bold, [/U ] for underline, etc. I'm not sure though. I usually put specifics in the notes field, just to be sure. Something along the lines of, "I've marked the places that need special format. Would you please be sure that the tags are correct." I don't know if that helps or not, and I don't know if it holds the story up or not.

Actually, the codes are true .html, not what's used on the boards, so...

<i> italics</i>
<b>bold</b>
<center>center</center>
<br> without a return afterward will give you a single spaced line

minx is right, but you use '<' and '>' brackets for the stories, not [ and ]. If you want someone to actually help put in the codes in the story, I vounteer. :)

Thanks all.

One question, about <br>

If I wanted something to appear like this?

Line 1.
Line 2.
Line 3.

It would go into the box like this?

Line 1.<br>Line 2.<br>Line 3.<br>

Have I got the right of it?

I don't use the <br> I just use double return when typing it in Word and I get the line breaks. I only use the <i> <u> and <b>

yes, exactly right :)

I use it my Mother Goose series... you can see it here: Mother Goose: The Queen of Hearts

When I do the nursery rhymes, I use the <br> ... so the original looked like:

The Queen of Hearts<br>The Queen of Hearts,<br>She made some tarts<br>All on a summer's day...

You can see what happens when you don't use the <br> here (I have to submit an edit...): Mother Goose: Little Bo Peep

Thanks Selena.

I have a few bits of song lyrics in the one I'm going to submit. They don't look quite right with the space between them.

Yeah, I've used it for song lyrics, too... perfect for that :)

Be Careful

I've always submitted my stories by copying and pasting them with the html tags. I like seeing the story in Lit's format and often catch things I want to change during submission. The downside is that going from MS Word to that causes a couple of strange glitches. I'll find paragraphs run together (when they were fine in Word). My submission process is usually a couple of hours long (then again my stories are always long anyway), while I go over everything to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. The tags will allow you to see the formatting as the reader will in Lit's backdrop.

I always write my work in word, and then save it as a text document. This format takes out any bold or italic, but does leave the paragraph formatting in. I have the choice of uploading the document, or copying and pasting.

Any special formatting I need, such as italic or bold is included in the 'Notes' box.

It's worked for me every time, and also if I copy and paste into the box, it means I can open and re-edit any time.

Shows how long it's been since you submitted a story. Can't do that anymore.

There's a good 'How to' on this by Alex de Kok - Bold or Italics (I think). Don't think he covers <br> or line breaks generally though.

I still always use .doc. Can someone explain how <br> works for an 'eejit'?

The br in the brackets is short for break, like i is short for italics or b for bold.

I use WordPad, cut/paste it into Word for spellcheck, then cut paste it back into WordPad afterwards. I also simply type the HTML codes in as I'm writing the story. That way I can just copy/paste it into the box, add my tags, fill in the title and cat, and preview. Occasionally I run into trouble doig it that way, but not often.

<br> is a "manual line break" or the equivalent of a shift-return in MS Word. It starts a new line without any white space between the lines.

Lit's formatting uses a double <br> to add the white space between paragraphs instead of the <p>, "paragraph break" tag.

You don't need to use <br> anywhere in your submissions. A line break is automatically converted to a <br> tag by lit when published. use line breaks just like in these forums. One return for a single line, two returns for a double. That's it.

The fact that this post aroused me, does that make me a weirdo? :D

didn't work for me... had to use the <br> tag to single space... *shrug*

Now, that's truly weird. I've never had to do that.

You can see the difference in the examples I gave... this one:
Mother Goose: Little Bo Peep
I didn't use the <br> tag and returned after the lines. It ended up double spaced.

This one:
Mother Goose: The Queen of Hearts

I DID use line breaks on, like this:
The Queen of Hearts<br>The Queen of Hearts,<br>She made some tarts<br>All on a summer's day...

and it turned out single spaced.

Were those submitted as Word files or as text in the box?

Looking at the source code for story pages, paragraphs begin and end with a "<br />" linebreak, for example:
<br />
"Look at the size of that thing!"<br />
Would it help to pre-format submissions by adding linebreaks for each paragraph? The story I want to submit is already formatted for html. I could replace all those <p>s and </p>s with <br />s just as easily as deleting them.

(I'm a complete literotica newbie. Hello, everybody!)
