cheating

there are audiences for both
personally, I think there is a time and place for each.
plot heavy stories tend to do well on vote scores, but nothing wrong with lotsa sex, if you don't mind the feedback.

no i dont mind the feed back at all. just wondering which people prefered in here do to this being a sex site..lol
wasnt sure if people prefered a story that built up to sex, or a story that just goes right to the action...:) everyone welcome to input on this matter, the more the better.

More plot!

A plot is always a good thing, and a good plot is a great thing! :) Often times the build up is better than the sex. Leave your readers at the edge of their seats wanting more before you have Character A shag Character B. Never stuff too much into a little space. If needbe, there is the Novel section at Lit and the use of "chapters". :)

now thats a good idea thanks..:) :)

on the other hand.....

too much build up goes beyond anticipation to boredom. I agree jumping right into sex is not necessary ( although many of my stories do). Some titillation within the first few paragraphs might help pique the reader's interest.

Also depends what cataegory you are going for /. Readers assume a Romance story will be a gradual build up, but other categories tend to get right to the meat oof the matter.

I prefer a plot, where sex just happens to be in the story, rather than the whole plot being written about a certain protagonist who's life goal is to fuck some other person.

mho.

chicklet

ps yes plot plot plot plot

Like they say, there is an audience for everything, but the sex will be much better if it's wrapped around a great story. Think of it this way: would you rather have a one-night stand, or a long, meaningful relationship? On second thought, bad analogy...

how about a long meaningful relationship where each night was as fresh as a new one night stand?

Fantasyland

Sure, if you're into fantasy fiction. Maybe the tooth fairy and Santa Claus could get it on at the North Pole in such a story.

I constantly struggle with the plot vs. sex dilemma.

When I'm reading online erotica, I know that for myself I tend to skim for the more exciting parts further in. I like it when the basics are established because it helps get a visual & feel for everything that happens. However if it's plot heavy with a few teasing paragraphs snuck in, then I feel hosed. I read erotica for the fantasies & descriptions of sex, I can get plot with "PG-13" lovescenes from a library book.

When I write, I like to establish the scene with the reasons why the sex is about to happen and a description of my fantasy lover in that story. Sometimes I do get into plot a bit more, especially in recent stories, but I try to vary plot stories in my collection with some get-right-to-it stories for the arroused audience. You have to keep in mind that if they're already excited from reading & finishing one story, hitting a slow-build plot story is going to ummmm "harsh their buzz". So variety is good so as not to disappoint.

My heaviest plot-driven story is one that is stuck as an "Alan Smithee" because ummmm well it introduced the topic of a woman with a black eye and even though the sequence of events all followed a natural course, feedback was all negative because the guy didn't end up in a bodybag by the end of the story. So it was a choice of scrapping my best writing ever or damning it to anonymity... I haven't gone plot-heavy since then because I'm concerned with public reaction in case I make it too close to reality. (Blush)

But that's just me,

purpose?

Personally, I like reading good prose.

Some of my "stories" here at Lit are less story and more fun sex scene and emotional intimacy. Others are lots of plot and character development.

In each I try to make sure that the writing is enjoyable: the tone is consistent and the images are vivid.

Appropriately, that is what I like to read. Whether it is plot driven or climax driven isn't as important to me as if it is well written.
