I know this is a sex site, but I need some tech help. I'm pretty computer illiterate, so bear with me. I was having trouble staying connected on YIM, continually getting an error message that said something like, "you were disconnected because someone else is also signed in on another computer". So, I decided to uninstall/reinstall as I'd done in the past when the program became corrupted. However, this time Yahoo messenger wasn't in the add/remove programs list. Strange, right? It's been over a year since I switched ISP to Verizon Fios with Yahoo as my e-mail. I decided to try talking to a Live Chat Agent @ Yahoo to try solving this. We had some difficulty initially, before the agent finally understood the issue. I was advised to locate the Yahoo folder on my C drive and delete the entire Yahoo messenger folder, which I did. It seems that something was deleted along with messenger. Now, whenever I click on a blue highlighted e-mail link, that in the past would open my Yahoo e-mail window with the highlighted e-mail in the "To" box, I see an Error message pop up:

Error loading C:\Progra~1\Yahoo\Common\Ymmapi.dll The specified module could not be found

In other words, I can no longer go directly from a blue highlighted link directly to my e-mail window. I hope I described this problem clearer here than to the live chat agent....perhaps there was a language barrier. Anyone know what this means? Or, how to get back whatever has been lost? I thought of using system restore, to get back to before Tuesday 4/20, which was when I deleted the Yahoo messenger folder...then I'd be back where I started, with a corrupted YIM program. I'm not even sure how to find system restore anymore, but think someone told me it's not good to use it a lot. Also tried contacting Verizon tech support, and was told that I should contact my pc manufacturer, since it isn't a connectivity issue, hence, not his problem. Verizon does have a pay service who he's sure can probably fix the problem for a fee. Nice, huh? I should pay them to fix a problem caused when I took the step by step advice of a Yahoo live chat agent, who Verizon is affiliated with.
My OS is Windows XP, and Mozilla Firefox is my browser, if that's relevant.

I would try the system restore and see what that does. It sounds like when you click to check your email then that is logging you into chat and logging you out of messenger. There is a setting in the email that you need to change so it doesn't log you in. Like I said try the system restore and see what that does. Feel free to pm me if you have questions or need more help.

It sounds like you need to resintall Yahoo, that you deleted at least the majority of those files. Once you reinstall it if there are still files it will most likely ask you if you want to overwrite those with the new, say yes.
Now about getting booted it sounds like someone else was using your log in and logging in on another computer. I'd change all your passwords just to be safe.

First of all try uninstalling yahoo from the control panel (add/remove programs) then re-download it. If that doesn't work and you don't feel like doing a system restore or reformat your computer there are free alternatives to yahoo MSN, like Trillian.

Let us know if you're still having problems

help thanks

Thanks for the replies. Not sure if you mean remove Yahoo Instant Messenger again, or not. As stated above, there was no Yahoo Messenger in the add/remove programs list, so the chat agent told me to find it in my C drive in the Yahoo folder, and I removed the entire messenger folder from there, before re-installing YIM from a link that the agent provided. No more problems staying connected to YIM. However the new issue with the e-mail link surfaced.

This morning, I looked in the control panel add/remove programs again. There is still no Yahoo Messenger program listed there. There is a "Verizon Yahoo Applications" and "Yahoo address auto complete", the only references to Yahoo on the list. The latter is one that I've never been able to remove, unknown why, it just remains there after attempting to remove it. Do you think I should remove the Verizon Yahoo Applications program? Would I then need to go to Verizon's website to find and re-install that program? Thanks again for your help.

Maybe call Verizon and ask them as they should know about what is in there program.

NO, No no dont system restore!! im gonna send this short in the hopes that you havent done it yet, reply and let me know i think i can explain how to fix your issue

Ok It sounds Like what happened was possibly you had spyware or a virus scanner or something like that, That may have run a scheduled scan while you were using your Yim. Or since your error is coming from a third party software(yahoo) could possibly be that a virus or trojan deleted the dll file.
DLL files are like modules that can be plugged into different programs whenever a program needs the particular features that come with the DLL. The original concept behind DLL files was to simplify things. It was recognized that there were many functions common to a lot of software. For example, most programs need to create the graphical interface(like YIM) that appears on the screen. Instead of having to contain the code to create the interface themselves, programs call on a DLL for that function. The idea is to have a central library where everyone can obtain the commonly used functions, as they are needed. This cuts down on code, speeds things up, is more efficient yada yadda yadda. Dynamic library links are what theyre called, and a pain in the ass , to a pc tech.

What the tech you spoke with shouldve had you do was first before you went to uninstall it MAKE SURE ITS NOT RUNNING!!. ya know how you can close it but its still down in the corner next to your clock, its still running. so i have a few things you can do to find the ym dll, delete it completely then how to re-intall making sure all the needed files , are added.

Sometimes the DLL file may be found on other program folders and can be copied to the location where it was reported missing. This is easy because Windows has a built-in search function where you can find a certain filename. Simply fire up the “Search” from your “Start” menu and type in the filename(Ymmapi.dll) and make sure hidden files and system files are included in the search. You can then click the “Search” button at let Windows do its work. If you find it, that’s a good thing; place it in the program folder of the program that caused the error or if uncertain, place the DLL in the “Windows” folder or the “system32” folder found inside.(my computer/c: Windows/system32/)if you locate the file open the folder in program files for yahoo messager next to the window your searcing in and just click and dreag the dll over, Remember where you placed it in case it doesn’t work. After that, reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not, it could be a version mismatch of the DLL. let me know if that works if not I have another trouble shooter

I´d say go for it. Its a third-party yahoo MSN.

I´d suggest using trillian, you can have multiple chat client in ones. Unless you really want to use the yahoo one

Exactly what happened. That's why I couldn't delete the folder at first, then noticed the icon in the lower corner by the clock & closed it. Only then would it let me delete it, and it took 3 attempts deleting parts at a time. I'm going to do the search for the file and post results. Thanks.

No dice

I tried the search function, including hidden files, with negative results.

almost there

Update:
I received this (partial) response from Yahoo with a solution, still basically passing the buck back to Verizon if it doesn't work:
Firefox 3.x:

1. Open Firefox.

2. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."

3. Click the "Applications" tab.

4. Scroll down it "Mail to" and change to "Use Yahoo! Mail."

5. Click "OK."

From now on, whenever you click an email link in a web site, the email
program you've selected will be used automatically.

I did this. Now I can click a blue highlighted link, and it takes me to my Yahoo mail window with the e-mail address in the "To" window, but with the words "mail to" preceding the e-mail address. Not a big deal, I can delete the 2 words before the e-mail address. However, once I'm at this e-mail window, I can't go back to the web page from which I started. Clicking on the < button takes me back to the page, but only for a flash, less than a second, then right back to the e-mail window. In the past, the original web page would still be shown, either in the top or bottom bars so I could go back to it when done writing an email. On top of this, now the original issue has resurfaced. The error message telling me "you've been signed out of messenger because there's someone else signed on a different pc" I tried to send this to 2Dre as an IM, but he has no IM link in his profile. I appreciate the help you computer savvy people are offering. Thanks again.

Things to do and not to do

1. Always close your YIM on your work computer before you leave or when you go home you will get an error message that says someone else is logged in.
2. K is right, change your passwords just in case, and yes ALL of them, not just YIM.
3. Never ever use auto complete for entering passwords. NOT EVER. It doesn't make your life easier, it makes hacker's lives easier.
4. Never, never ever ever do anything to your computer on 4/20, if you aren't stoned, your tech support guy will be. I decline to answer any questions as to wether or not I was.
5. If you haven't gotten your YIM working yet check your settings, the "mail to" thing sounds like a settings issue, although I admit I am not that conversant in YIM.
6. If you are still having issues go ahead and run the sys restore, it's seriously not a big deal, mostly just a pain in the butt due to the time it consumes.
7. If you run a sys restore, once done, reinstall YIM, notice I didnt mention uninstalling it. Again, K is right, if there is a version on your machine the new install will find it, tell you where it is, and ask if you want to remove it, overwrite it, or add this as a second install.
Good luck, and if you are still experiencing issues I will be happy to try and help you out tomorrow, but you will have to bear with me as I will be learning YIM on the fly.

Ok

After doing some quick poking around, and reading post #13 (duh), D Andre is correct, you don't need a sys restore.
Your initial issue was either A) you left yourself logged in on another machine (ie at work) or (as keleigh suggested) your YIM password was hacked. IF A you won't be able to do much until you log off the other machine. IF B, you will need to keep trying until you can log on and change your password.
Your second issue is confusing, deleting your yahoo folder should not have changed your browser (mozilla) setting and yet apparently did.
What it seems you need to do now is A) determine if you are in fact logged in on another computer to solve the initial error message situation. B) find the setting that is adding the "mail to" in the address bar.
Just for clarification, the YIM is one program and should be unrelated to the email setting of your browser which is an entirely seperate program and funtion, you don't require YIM to set Yahoo as your mail preference in firefox, that setting in firefox simply tells firefox where to go when you want to send mail (ie click on a hypertexted (blue) email address). The two issues should be, and should be persued as, seperate issues. I am at a loss thus far as to how your browser setting was changed by deleting an instant messenger program. I will continue to investigate and follow this post to see if I can actually be of some help here. Will check back in the AM.

Checking In

I have been checking back here throughout the day and I am guessing by the lack of any further posts that you have solved your issues. I have not had much time today to come up wityh an answer on the "mail to" thing, if and ro when I do I will post it here just in case you still need it. Good luck!!

Again, thanks for your interest. The problem is not so much the "mail to" preceding the e-mail address as I stated above:

Quote: However, once I'm at this e-mail window, I can't go back to the web page from which I started. Clicking on the < button takes me back to the page, but only for a flash, less than a second, then right back to the e-mail window. The error message telling me "you've been signed out of messenger because there's someone else signed on a different pc"

The problem now is that I can't get back to the original web page I was at when I clicked on the blue highlighted link which takes me to the e-mail window. I have to start all over, typing the web address into my address bar again. No one seems to know what the error message mentioned in my original post refers to, or how to get back whatever was deleted. I feel like taking a sledge hammer to this pc, and buying a Mac.
