I feel like a little kid.

I've had 3 cases of tonsil abscess this year, so my doctor has deemed it necessary to start removing permanent parts of my body....in other words, I'm scheduled for a tonsillectomy next month.

I'm terrified. I have hospital issues and all.

Has anyone had this done as an adult? Can you share your experiences, recovery time, etc? Reassurance? Death rate?

Ok maybe not that. I'm a big baby, yes.

:)

I had mine out as a child so not much help as an adult, but I am sure medicie has moved forward a lot from those dim, dark days and that awful matron who hated kids. You'll be OK....yes, I know that sounds trite but you know you can get through things when you have to and we will all be here with lots of positive vibes going your way.

Catalina :catroar:

i had mine out in seventh grade. i was talking again that same afternoon.

the only downside was i am now sick of vanilla soft serve carvel ice cream, since i ate it nonstop that weekend, and to this day cant eat it.

My mom had it done last year. She was on soup for about a week, and didn't fully get her voice back for about 2 days. But at the end of two weeks she was 100% back to normal. she's kind of a slow healer tho.

Thanks guys, you have helped....the medical sites all made it sound like I was going to go through a long, slow torture period and starve to death in the process. Was freaking myself out! Glad to know others have had better experiences.

I was something like 11 when I had mine out. the operation was cake, it was the pre-op part that sucked. they apparently sent in a total incompetent to take my blood. Got stuck so many times in each arm that I looked like a heroin junkie.

The recovery was a snap. Heck, my arms hurt worse the next day than my throat did. You'll be fine, sweetheart =)

Don't be scared to make them give you drugs!
Seriously, there's one time I think drugs are great and I have no qualms about taking them - it's when I'm in postsurgical pain. There is no reason, no earthly reason you have to suffer - pain should be a mumble, not a dull constant roar, they have meds for that. If they're gearing you up to hurt, that's cool, but don't be under medicated if you don't want to be.

K was 14 when he had his out, and his brother was 17. He said it hurt, but he's a huge baby. And he wouldn't eat the popsicles and drink the cold drinks that would have eased the swelling in his throat, and improved his pain levels.

When my daughter was three she had hers out, and they gave her such great pain meds that she was in NO pain. We know cause she cut the shit out of her arm, and didn't cry. We didn't find out until it had already scabbed over.

I've never had mine out but I can send a hug your way and tell you that I'll keep sending them until you're all better:D :rose:

A co-worker of my moms said today that this ENT is really good about shoving you full of drugs, so that perked me up LOL.

Amen, sister!

I have no experience or wisdom to share but I can empathize with you about the fear.
