Two questions if I can.

1. Where should I put my editor acknowledgment? I have put them in my submission notes but the do not appear with the story. Should I put them at the start of the story as a note before the body?

2. Is there any way to group my stories by character? I write random encounters with some of the same characters but not really multi part stories. I have 1 that was posted as such so thanks to whomever did that. How can I organize the rest of the stories or who to I contact about it?

Thanks everyone and all.

Larry thanks for the editing I will figure it out at some point.

When in doubt PM Manu as he is the technician of the site.

Good luck!

The code that causes stories to group by series works off the first few words of the title.

Naturally, it will catch My Story Ch. 01 and My Story Ch. 02 and group them.

But, it will also catch My Story: Prelude and My Story Epilogue

In this case, using the colon with "prelude" causes it to alphabetize ahead of the ch. 01, 02, etc. Punctuation comes before "A" in the Lit alphabet. Then, because "epilogue" starts with E, it will come at the end after the "Ch."

You can test how something will show up in your list when you submit it. The pending submission will be in the same place in your list as the final story. If it's in the wrong place, you can fiddle with the title a little, delete the one that's in the wrong place ( click the pending link and look for the "delete" button at the end of the submission ) then resubmit the tweaked title.

Note: Clicking the "pending" link and saving any changes pushes your submission to the back of the queue again. In this case, it shouldn't really matter, because odds are that you're not falling back far. You should be doing this immediately after submitting the first time.

Once you learn the "Lit Alphabet" ( you can explore the category alphabetical listings for pointers. Use a large category such as Incest that has the widest range of title usage ) you shouldn't need to submit to test. You should be able to figure it out before hitting the submit button.

You have to be careful of this if you start two titles for completely different storylines with similar wording, because the code will identify them as a series.

So, the only way to group your stories is to use common beginning words.

You could use the character's name.

MiChar: Title One
MiChar: Title Two

That will group them as a series, alphabetized by the subtitle.

If you need any sort of sequence, you'll have to use numbers. If you just want a number without a "ch." or "pt." designation, you need to use the "notes" section to say that you want only the number to appear in the title. Otherwise, Laurel automatically appends "ch." to any story that uses sequencial numbering.

MiChar 01: Title One
MiChar 02: Title Two

For example.

That will group them in sequence without saying they're chapters, though some may still interpret them as such.

The stated plan is that authors will eventually be able to designate our own series and place stories in it, but that announcement was some time ago, and it hasn't happened yet. So, for now, you're stuck using title tricks to get things to group the way you want them in your list.

Thanks for the information. Is there any way to move the stories around once they have already been published? Can I go in and re submit them using your tips and then remove their first postings?

You could actually just edit the title to either cause them to appear as a series, or in a different alphabetical order.

Here's the editing method for Lit from the copy-pasta I keep around for editing questions. It covers all types of edits, but simple title edits are also included.

  • Take note of the url of your story/chapter. That's the address appearing in the address bar of your browser when you view the first page of your story. You really only need the last part after the /s/ that represents your title.
  • Start a new submission.
  • Use the same title as the original ( or as much as will fit ) plus something such as *EDIT*
  • Fill in the same category, then fill description and keywords with placeholders, as they don't matter. ( Unless one of these things are what you're editing )
  • If editing the story text, paste/upload the new text in the "story text" section. You need to upload the whole story, not just the edited sections. If editing anything else, copy the "notes" section detailed below in order to fill this section.
  • In the "notes" section, say what you are editing. If story text, then put that. If title, then put the requested NEW title here. You can fill in edited descriptions/keywords/category above, but you'll still want to list any such changes here. It's a good idea to list the url that I mentioned in step 1. This is unique to every story/chapter, and can help eliminate the potential for human error. As mentioned above, if you are editing something other than the story text, copy what you put in the notes section to the "story text" as well. This is simply because there must be something in that section for you to submit.
  • Click "Review", then "Submit"

Edits are subject to the same wait time as a new story. I have seen edits go up in bulk in far less time than a story usually requires to post, though.

Edits will not appear on the public side immediately. Wait at least 24 hours after the "edited" submission vanishes from your private author list before worrying that your changes haven't been applied. Changes may not all appear at the same time, either. Page 1 may change, while page 2 will remain the same until an hour or so later. Be patient as the system catches up.

If you edit the story in this manner ( as opposed to deleting and re-submitting ) you'll retain your votes, views, comments, etc. The only thing that will be changed is what you say that you want changed. It will not appear on the New List again.

If you wish to delete a story, use much the same method, except put something such as *DELETE* in the title, and say that you want to delete the story in question in the "notes" section.

If you wish to delete all of your stories, an entire series, etc., then use the normal delete process, but explain in the "notes" section that you want to do a mass delete, and what type.

Convoluted, but it does work. It gets a little easier as you get used to it.

Thanks again. This is what I wanted to do. I now have to figure out which stories I want to be linked together. Oh and come up with a title to start them with. I never thought I would submit any of these stories to a web site but I am really enjoying the writing.

The code that causes stories to group by series works off the first few words of the title.

That code seems to be far from perfect.

It takes a day or so (I've never actually tried to time it) for a new story in a series to get grouped with that series. For a while, it just appears below the series but isn't listed as a part of it. Any ideas why that happens, Dark?

An some authors have the very same series listed two times (at least) among their works. I've never been able to figure out what the reason for that is, either.

In my case, it was because I posted one of my LST3Ks without the "Ep." part and it created an entirely new series. The original series had all the old episodes, while the new series had all the old episodes plus the new one.

When I did the title edit to add back in the "Ep." it, it just changed so that both series contained all the episodes.

This happened once before, and I reported it to Manu. It was fixed, but obviously the bug behind it wasn't.

If you don't have any series to start with ( or at least don't have one with a similar title start ) then it shouldn't be a problem.

The delay of a story merging into a series is probably just background code that only runs so often, which is likely why edits don't appear on the public side immediately as well.

Seems reasonable. Thanks.

Thanks everyone, especially Darkniciad. It did work and the edit worked as well. Thanks a lot.
