Need help finding an old story involving some sort of big cat

A few years back I read a series about a woman who becomes the lover of a lion or tiger or some other transforming large cat. One scene that I remember particularly involves him in lion form mounting her and biting the back of her neck, leaving bite marks that are later noticed by some other were-lion character.

I'm pretty sure the setting wasn't modern, and it had a fantastical, villagey, open terrain type feel to it. If anyone remembers this story, please let me know!
