I have been told that I have some writing talent. I am not looking to write a novel, but would like a little advice on how to get started writing for this site, just for fun. Who knows, I may be talented!

I love writing erotica, and I wrote a short email to a guy in Afhganistan that I hope to meet for real one day, just to keep him entertained and hopefully anxious to meet me. I think he definitely is anxious to meet, but I am debating whether or not to send the erotic email. I don't want to scare him off! Anyway, should I submit just the short email here to get a quick opinion? Have not even started to write a story for here, but I will.

Hopefully someone will post an answer to this question, then I will get started.

I would suggest fleshing out the email into more of a story rather than just an email. Then post it here or in the Story Feedback forum for comments.

Don't think about doing it - just do.

Thank you!

Thanks so much, I was afraid what kind of response I might get from an author! I am so proud of myself, because I did write it as a story, not mentioning any names. So I will post it right here...

Helloo Is anyone interesting in giving me an opinion?

Hey, I just wrote the above story to my B/F in Iraq/Afghanistan on a whim, but I was wanting an opinion on it. I definitely will kick it up a few notches in future stories.

I suggest putting it in the story discussion forum - more eyes there. ;)

Crap! I screwed up, I meant the feedback forum, and you don't have Private Messaging turned on.

Advice

You might get a better response if you switch on your Private Messages. I, for one, have a number of comments on the excerpt you posted, but you don't really want them displayed for all to see, do you?

Go to User CP (top left of this page) then click on Edit Options (in the left hand column) and then tick Enable Private Messaging in the second box down. Finally click Save Changes at the bottom of that page.

I thought I did have private messaging enabled, sorry. I am glad you pointed that out to me. I guess I am ready for the feedback, a little scared though. Go ahead, give me your best shot.

Got Talent?

On the "I think I have writing talent" thing, not on this story in particular.

I think (purely my opinion) that literotica is a great place to get started. Talent or not, writing takes skill, and skill takes practice, even if you have the talent. There's a lot to learn, no matter how good you think you are.

The thing about erotica is that it comes with a natural intensity, which is hard to capture in other fiction. It gives you a head start, sort of like training wheels.

On top of that, the site offers a lot of different opportunities for feedback, which is part of what you need to improve. There are the boards, editors, reader comments, and scores, all to let you know how you're doing and, sometimes, what you're doing wrong.

Lastly, the "fun" part is key. Eventually, writing will become something like work, something you have to make yourself do to accomplish something really, really good. But to get started, it has to be fun or you'd never put the energy into it that it needs.

As long as you have a thick skin, and keep at it, yes, writing erotica here is, IMO, a good path to learning to be a writer.

The main point is... don't hesitate. Get started...

A quick appraisal of your writing...

Overall, your grammar is okay and your style is okay. There are a few flaws, however. You need to learn how to write dialogue, and work to include it. You do have at least one section of dialogue in here (can you find it?) that you don't present properly. Also, you switch from past to present tense, randomly at first. There is a distinct switch at one point from past to present. Generally, switching tense in midstream is hard to pull of. In general, any use of present tense works well for e-mails to living people (because it implies to them that it is happening... it's an expression of a shared fantasy) but not for a story, because stories are voyeuristic, they're about the reader imagining the characters doing it, or rather having done it, not the reader doing it themself.
