Could just imply a man, in which case it's not necessarily homosexual, but rather just straight up masterbation.

Incidentally, I like the idea of the rose fetish. Maybe the man's one true love ends up being a girl working in a struggling flower shop? The rose fetish idea is wonderful. I like it a lot. I also love the idea that the guy in the story is hot for a woman in a flower shop. He fantasizes about her and can only get his erections with roses.

Let me pull these ideas together with my own, inspired by the movie American Beauty.

One of the most famouse scenes was a man in bed with his wife, but he has his daughter's friend on his mind.
He fantasizes she is lying on the ceiling naked, full of rose petals that fall off her nude body.
He lustfully anticipates the time when all the petals fall off and he could get the full view.
Then his wife wakes up and sees he is getting an erection.

Assuming the girl is not still a minor, like she is in the movie, you can take it to the next level.

I like the two ideas plus this alot.
This explains the character's personality and perhaps motivation.
