Need computer help please!!

I fear I may have picked up a virus of some sort and I'm not sure how or from where but some of the icons on my desktop have gone kinda screwy and have like split images and are now a transparent purple color almost. It started out with one, then two and now 3... how can I find out why??

I have Win 98... is there some way to do a virus scan or something that would help?

Do you have a virus checker? I'd run that first to see what's up.

Then I would restart the entire thing - actually turn it off for ten minutes or so and then reboot. See if that makes a difference.

It could be that you need a new monitor - my folk's monitor went out in a similar way.

There are lots of real computer wizards around here (I'm not one). Someone will have the answers for you if this doesn't help.

Hi... yes I have. It's taken place over two days now and started and re-started my comp many times. I'll give that scan a try. It seemed to start after I downloaded the latest version of WinMx, the music download prgram

I just thought of this. Have you checked your settings in the control panel? Has someone changed the color display? (sometimes my kids do that when they are playing different games - )

Does your Win 98 computer have enough memory/speed to handle the latest music program?

I'm the only one who uses this computer and I never change the display or color settings on it...

I did go into my control panel to uninstall the WinMx and all teh icons in the control panel section are messed up as well... like two of the icon images are shopped in half and one half is on either side of the icon... kind of like everything has shifted or something somehow.

So I did uninstall the WinMx and the 'reycle' bin icon the my desktop went back to normal but the others didn't and I can't seem to get this virus scan site to work for me.

It takes alot to work..and you have to be real patient it can sometimes seem like it is freezing should have warned you... just be patient. and shut everything else off while you do it so it doesnt freeze. Good Luck!

Oh god. Excuse me but you're an idiot. Using the net to download stuff without active virus protection. Jeez, your machine is more than likely so infected, it will need a total rebuild to fix it up.

Some people should put their PC back in the box and return it to the shop they bought it from. Tell the salesman, "I'm sorry, I have to return this to you, I'm too stupid to own one."

For F***'s sake, with the amount of FREE anti-virus software out there, you should at least get something on your machine.
