And it's right on the tip of my tongue.

I'm writing a follow up to my Valentine's story, Without Reservation, and am looking for a word to describe the relationship the characters had. It only lasted a weekend, but was much more than a fling and it ended well. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I assume interlude is probably too euphemistic.

Can't think straight yet this morning.

Good luck, though! :)

the ones that last a weekend and end well are "the absolute best relationships EVER!"

Too good!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I really appreciate it!!

Min - So good to see you here again! I've missed you.

I think it's the same I'm reaching for. Cause these are all good words, but there's another one, just waiting.

By the way, the thesaurus was no help...

I'd call it an affair.

Then there's that thing that Kurt Vonnegut calls a gran falloon. That's where you think you have something in common with someone but you actually don't. When you do have something in common with someone - when you share a fate - it's called a karass

These are from "The Book of Bokunen" in Cat's Cradle.

I don't know that I'll find the word you're looking for, but I wanted to mention that I'm having fun looking... I don't want to hijack your thread so I'll start a new one.. :p And keep looking.

And when two people are destined to be together and die within an hour of each other, that's a duprass, is it not? I haven't re-read the book in years, but those terms always stuck with me.

It might be an affair. The problem with that word is that for most of us, it's taken on a bad connotation. An affair is typically to refer to an escape from a primary relationship. This was definitely an escape from reality, but neither woman was in another relationship.

Dunno, Doc. I'm not familiar with the story, or the characters in this case, but affair always makes me think of a married person straying. Not sure if that's true of everyone, or just how I'm used to hearing it used.

If it were a planned get togther, would "tryst" work?

Logo,

This is kinda, semi, sorta cheating, but the French may have a word that will work, AMOURETTE.

Three other possibilities that probably aren't exactly right: Liasion, Tryst, Assignation. (bad Vella, she snuck in and posted TRYST before me, TRYST me, she did)

If all else fails, you may have to fall back on spending a paragraph or two on the fact there is no perfect word in English.

I'm thinking tryst is the right word. Although it does connote forethought and planning, but it's the closest. OK, back to writing.

Feel free to jack this thread any which way you can...

But that's not the one that's hanging on the edge of my consciousness mocking me, dammit!

I think you ought to invent a phrase for it.

It was a section out of their lives, stolen. A few days out of responsibility's reach. A feast, removed; a revel in aspic.
