Ok I can see the upload option now, but its saying its not a valid extension. What now?

Go to your User CP (control panel), on the left side there will be "Settings and Options". Chose edit avatar and then upload the picture (browse, chose and then upload). You might need to log off after for the photo to show - I've never had that problem but I've noticed others mention it.

I understand. I keep a file of things I've run across.

To resize I use a few programs... IrfanView.com and microsoft Picture It! Express 9 (it came with XP). They are easy to download and very easy to use.
