For some reason there's a program that decided to install itself (I've never heard of the thing). It's called CommonName. The dumb thing is responsible for massive amounts of popup windows. I have uninstalled this program 8 times now. The program still runs. Every time I try to delete it, I'm told that I cant because Windows is using it to run. I have used regclean and deleted it from the registry too. How do I get the stupid thing to go away for good?

try getting ad-aware. It removes stuff like that...

I cant find the link though try google!

thanks... I found one of those and got rid of the dumb file. It's finally gone *jumps up and down*

Is it the CommonName Address Bar thing?

If so.. try this

To uninstall the CommonName Browser Address Bar, folllow these simple instructions:

1. Close all Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer browser windows
2. Go to your start menu and select "Settings", "Control Panel"
3. Select "Add/Remove Programs"
4. Select CommonName from the list and hit the add/remove button
5.Once the uninstall message displays, reboot your computer

CommonName is now uninstalled!

btw

incase anyone cares CommonName is auto installed when you install that really annoying Gator program.

And uninstalling Gator doesn't get rid of CommonName..

The best way to get rid of CommonName is to go into "add/remove programs"

thanks Freakygurl, but I never installed the gator program. Never had a desire to prolly never will either. That's what makes it rather strange

What about Imesh?

I think there are several other programs that it comes with also.

I'd have to do a search. But I'll bet it piggybacked with another program that you installed. (Either off the net or off a disk)

It's pretty common for programs to have other crap with them.

Use adaware anytime you download something.. it will keep all that crap cleaned up.

if it comes up again, it's a malicious virus that slips past some anti virus programs. most likely spy ware

that's the odd thing, except for today installing regclean and the adaware, I havent installed anything since february I think. This thing just came outta nowhere a few days ago. I havent even been downloading music or anything either lately. That's what I find rather strange.

hackers/crackers/ and exploiters can write code in html format (the language behind web pages) since your computer automatically loads it up, it's possible to get a program that way.

I got my hard drive erased by going to a website and I didn't click on anythin.

I've never heard of a hard drive being erased by just going to a webpage and NOT clicking on something.

W and U.. go into your "settings" then "control panel" check the add/remove programs.. See if Gator or Imesh or CommonName are listed.

no Gator, no Imesh.. and commonname is gone now. the adaware program deleted the commonname. I uninstalled the program 8 times and it would still run (that's messed up).

and Guru, I keep everything up to date on this thing. it's really hard not to since those updates dont take very long for me to get. I just have no idea where this one thing came from since I havent installed anything recently.

Is regclean a shareware, or do you have to buy it?

thanks FG... I would say it came from my kazaa, but I havent used the thing since last May. the places I would expect this came from, it hasnt. I'm still rather confused.. but I'm not too worried since I'm not getting those stupid popup windows anymore from commonname.
