NBC Cancels 'West Wing' After 7 Seasons

By DAVID BAUDER
AP Television Writer
PASADENA, Calif.

The new president on "The West Wing" will be a real short-timer: NBC announced Sunday it was pulling the plug on the Emmy-winning political drama after seven seasons in May.

NBC, struggling to regain its footing after the worst season in its history, also outlined several midseason schedule changes _ including the moves of popular dramas "Law & Order" and "Las Vegas."

"The West Wing" announcement wasn't much of a surprise. Although this season's story line with a presidential campaign involving a Democrat played by Jimmy Smits and Republican portrayed by Alan Alda has been strong critically, ratings have sunk with its move to Sunday nights.

The decision to cancel it was made before actor John Spencer, who played former presidential chief of staff Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack Dec. 16, said Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment president.

…”Producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme, who created the show and guided it through its early years, will not be involved in the finale, Reilly said. …”

Warning - Political Post

I have a lot of catching up to do myself.

West Wing protrayed an Administration full of intelligent, caring, compassionate people in the White House who respected the citizens, the Constitution, checks and balances, laws, privacy, the people of the world, and on which you never see a lobbyist?

A fine fictional program.

It will be missed. It was called America's Civics Lessons because it delved into how our government works better than what my children learn in school.

And it gave us an glimpse of what a government of the people, as opposed to of the corporation, would be like.

It will come as no surprise to you at all, Ted E Bare, I am sure, to learn that I abhor almost everything political in the 'fictional' series that is the West Wing.

The entire liberal agenda of left wing democrats was pounded out, show after show as Bartlett and company supremely looked down upon the unwashed masses being taxed to fulfill their liberal dreams of social equality.

And oh, my god, did they pour it on, the President has a gay daughter but thats just fine. The Presidents younger daughter, living in the White House is shacking up with a black man right next door to the Presidents bedroom, yeah, right.

Lets give more money to public radio and television which no one except pointy headed liberals watches, aside from the Sesame Street crowd, brainwash the kiddies with a left wing green frog and a big bird! Amazing.

And lets give more money to the Maplethorp ilk of perverted artists who use fecal matter as a medium, shades of Ellsworth Toohey in Ayn Rand's Fountainhead.

And of course, ala Hillary Clinton, lets hate the rotten Republicans because they fight so stupidly against socialized medicine for the masses.

And lets increase the minimum wage, drive small businesses into bankruptcy and then we can spend more money on welfare programs, welfare housing and mass, public transportation, woweee, we can be more like the Europeans, no cars, no homes, no luxuries, but damn it, we will have an equal level of poverty for all!

And, ah, yes, lets cut the defense budget and cancel weapons programs by at least 25 percent like good ole Bill Clinton did and while we are at it, lets gut the Intelligence community by 30 percent, cut the CIA and the NSA.

I has taken nearly 5 years just to bring the intellegence community and the military levels back to the pre Clinton years.

But hey, those god damned terrorists kidnapped my daughter and have a plan to blow up the golden gate bridge....lets assassinate someone! Lets bomb to terrorist training camps here there and everywhere...

Democrats are really stupid.

But, as SweetNPetite said, the writing and direction of Sorkin, was amazing. The show was fast paced, clever, witty and fun to watch and laugh at, as the liberal left churned out the propaganda, week after week.

But the hoity toity left intelligensia did present some nifty classical music, even some dave brubeck jazz and some other fine musicians and poets along the way.

Never mind that 200 people attend the opera while 200,000 watch a Nascar race, let the masses eat cake, they can afford to pay for the opera with whats left over from the nascar beer bust.

Anyway, enough of a rant, I too will miss the show, as I miss Northern Exposure and Mash...all with left wing writers and issues, but still...I am a glutton for punishment I guess, I watched anyway.

Now ,was this ambiguity intentonal??

I didn't care much either way about the politic issues of the series, but as an author, I appriciated it greatly. The first seasons were very educational to watch for anyone who wants to study good dialouge writing.
