It's

"red and black, friend of jack" and "red and yellow, kill a fellow."

or

"Red and yellow, kill a fellow" and "red and black, venom lack."

I've heard both sayings.. Not sure which is the "correct" one. But they do say the same basic thing ;)

Hehe, sd412 has been in rare form tonight hasn't he???

I always heard the latter, but like you said they maen the same thing.

My first rule of thumb has always been don't let any damn snakes bite ya!

So far it's worked for me :)

I always thought it was

"Black is slack, and red makes dead."

Oh, wait, we're talking about snakes.

The only snake I've come across is my one-eyed trouser snake.

That's how it goes! Thank you, Freakgurl! My sanity is spared! For now. :D

Man, I hope I'm never out in coral snake country. I'd be like, "Okay, let's see. Red and black, friend of... no, wait. Red and yellow... ow! It bit me!"
