Svenskaflicka's recent thread got me thinking (depite it's efforts ). What flags are you guys waving? I know of a few bits and a few americanos. What else do we have?

I guess I know what you imply, but you do know that that combination of color is the single most common one for national flags? I can think of approx. 15 myself..

Then again, you COULD live in Russia, France or Chile for all I know.

Fortunately I live where our class/intelligence agency system is adequate enough (or not paranoid enough) not to have to fly the flag wherever 3 or more people regularly meet. Co-incidentally the colours are the same.

i don't know about that gauche son but our other son was banned from his local night club the other week for wearing his rugby shirt with a cross of st george flag motif on the pocket, two of his mates were hoisted out for the same crime. it was the flag that was offensive according to the manager not the t-shirt style.

the official line from the club, union flags and cross of st george flags are not permitted to be displayed as they may cause offence to the club members of non british origin.

one of his mates, trevor, is west indian origin, he was flung out for his england ruby shirt as well. trevor was the most offended of the whole issue judging by his remarks to us all later.

i've never had a racist thought in my head, neither have my boys or hubby, but can you imagine the trouble this kind of action could inflame among less tollerant locals. is this political correctness gone mad at the time of a rugby world cup thingie and all.

Well, for those saying red, white, and blue, you really wouldn't know if they were American or Brit since the colors in the flag are the same.

Same as the Union Jack and the Tricolore, and a ton of other national flags. It's US-centricism that makes the phrase 'red, white and blue' apply to the Stars and Stripes only.

Oh, and on the Red, White, & Blue, if you look you'll find buckets of flags that are those colors. I've been told by sources with reasonable textile knowledge (i.e. my wife) that for a very long time, indigo and cochineal were really the only dyes that were colorfast enough to do duty on a flag you were flying over your sailing ship. Or one being used to inspire your troops to stand in long lines shoulder to shoulder in bright colored coats and shoot at a similarly attired line of foes about 15 yards away. They found that troops that had wishy-washy, sun-faded flags cut and run at the first sign of danger.

I've been told America is an interesting place. I grew up there, but I've been living in California for years now and, to quote Jon Carroll of the S.F. Chronicle, "It's nice for a Californian to visit America occasionally. It gives him a sense of his roots."

I'm a brit.

I wave a big Manchester United Flag. And most people get offended by that too Lorri Love...there is a place in town that will not let anyone in who wears any form of football shirt. Whgich offends me because they obviously think we're all thugs.....and though there is a few nasty thugs most of us footie nuts are quite nice really...we can even be civilised....occassionally.


I think i have totally gone off on a tangent...but then that seems part of the course for this thread

I just looked and my state flag is also red, white, and blue. Didn't our states have any creativeness to come up with something different from the national flag? I think our state should change its flag design and make the colors orange and white. That's the predominant color you see in our state anyway.

If I waved a flag it would be that of my ancestors since the conquest, Mexico's. I love it for the story told on the central panel, and for deeply sentimental reasons.
