"A growing number! Jon F. Merz was one of Team 2001's winners; his NaNo book The Destructor was published by Pinnacle Books in March 2003. Lani Diane Rich, sold her 2002 NaNo-penned manuscript, Time Off For Good Behaviorto Warner Books, and it came out to great reviews in October 2004, and won the Romance Writers of America RITA award for Best Debut Novel eight months later. Her 2003 NaNoWriMo novel was published by Warner Books as Maybe Baby in 2005.

CharleyH said:I had hoped no one caught that. Why bother with Nano? If you could take your time and write something better? Why only try in Nano? Why not do it for the rest of your year?

oggbashan said:Answer 1. The whole point of NaNo is practising consistent output.
Answer 2. You can but NaNo is about self-discipline.
Answer 3. I do, most of the year. My 2003 NaNo 'Flawed Red Silk' was posted here before the end of November 2003. Since then my output has continued, posted here, elsewhere and as entries in non-erotic writing contests.

Charley, I'm not going to argue with you. I say go with what works for you. But different styles work for different people. To put is in a Judeo-Christian way; there were 12 different tribes of Israel, eh? Nanoers are simply from a different tribe than you are, and some people write for the simple joy of it.CharleyH said:Well, why waste 40,000 words that no one will ever see? It doesn't seem like consistent output. It seems inconsistent.
Self-discipline to write an outline and to continue writing outlines and be a really great treatment person, that's what I see in Nano. But if you never revisit that story, never fix it, edit and primp it as I have seen for three years being on Lit? Is that discipline as an author? I support you all, writing is as a Nano, writing an outline, but I'm sure the purpose of it is greater. Publishing in the end I think, or trying, at least.

) dr_mabeuse said:I don't do NaNo either. I don't knock it any more, because I know it works for some people as a motivational tool and gives them a sense of accomplishment, but to me it seems an awful lot like speed sex or speed eating. Writing isn't something I want to do under a deadline, or any kind of limitation, for that matter.
I stay away from those "In less than 100 words" things too, or the ones that want you to write a story using a spider, a toothbrush, and a kangaroo, or without using pronouns, or any of those other contrivances. Writng ain't a game. You should use both hands when you do it and go all out.
I worry too that, if I were speed writing, I'd pick up bad habits. With 1700 words a day, I know I'd be tempted to take short cuts, gloss over things, and settle for less. 30 days of writing is enough to turn those short cuts into permanent bad habits that then have to be unlearned.
But that's just me. Best of luck to the participants, though. I hope you find what you're looking for.
